Van Gogh (1853 1890) a master of the Post Impressionist period. His artwork is simultaneously complex and naive, passionate and innocent, vibrant and subtle, tender yet honest. His heavily laid brushstrokes indicate an almost physical engagement with his art. His paintbrush and pallette have come to touch a resonant chord throughout the world. His paintings powerfully influenced the later current of the Expressionist movement in modern art. He remained relatively unknown during his lifetime but Van Gogh's art became astoundingly popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century. Monet (1840 1926) is recognized as one of the founders of impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions of nature. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression Sunrise. He was entranced by the way sunlight played off subjects. Trusting his perceptions, he painted in brilliant colour and light which gave the world a glimpse of nature as never before considered. Like strolling through the world's museums. Degas (1834 1917) was one of the founders of the impressionism movement, although he disliked the term and thought of himself as working in realism, his work actually traversed many artistic styles. His paintings display his mastery in the depiction of movement, apparent in his studies of dancers and of racehorses, and he liked to project how we view active scenes by cropping subjects awkwardly and by choosing unusual viewpoints. Of course all this along with his alternating vivid use of rich and chromatic colour. Like strolling through the world's museums. Why just hang prints? Renoir (1841 1919) was a master in the Impressionist style and a major figure in it's development. He celebrated beauty from whatever elements he might come across. It has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau. Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. He suggested the details of a scene through freely brushed touches of colour, so that his figures softly fuse with one another and their surroundings. Like strolling through the world's museums. Turner (1775 1851) was an English landscape/seascape oil painter and watercolourist of the Romantic era whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. He drew inspiration from the raw power, immediacy, and energy of nature. The work of his matured talent created lightness, fluency, and boldness; employing a chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint; and were far ahead of his time. Vermeer (1632 1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of ordinary life. His entire life was spent in the town of Delft and was a moderately successful provincial painter. Virtually forgotten for nearly two hundred years, he was rediscovered in mid-1800s. Since that time, despite the fact that few of his paintings survive, his reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He is particularly renowned for the intimacy his subjects exude and his mastery in the treatment of light and perspective. Like strolling through the world's museums. Why just hang prints? The works of Rembrandt (1606 1669) are among the most recognizable from the golden age of Dutch baroque painting. He would become a teacher to all the great Dutch painters of his time. He was a master in the use of light and shade, and his colour application produced almost celestial effects. Above all, his work exemplifies his personal connection with his subjects, and empathy for the human condition. This collection also includes some of his sketches and drawings. Cezanne (1839 1906) can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century post impressionism and the early 20th century's new Cubism. The statement attributed to both Matisse and Picasso, that Cezanne "is the father of us all", cannot be easily dismissed. Using planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields, at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature. Homer (1836 1910) a late nineteenth century American landscape and seascape painter best known for chronicling the struggles and joys of folk who lived off the American seas, mountains, farms and pastures which he traversed during his working vacations. Virtually self-trained, he excelled in oil painting, but his gifts truly shined through his watercolor work. He, along with John Singer Sargent, are considered the finest American watercolorists of the nineteenth century. He had the ability to capture the essence and flavor of a moment in time, and of his subjects who are usually presented involved in candid daily activities. A beautiful tour of early americana. Sargent (1856 1925) a true virtuoso who during his career created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors. His portfolio documents worldwide travels from Venice, the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. An American expatriate, spending most of his professional life in Europe, he became the most saught after oil portrait painter of elite society, but when viewing their commissioned portraits the patrons were often taken back by his subtly unorthodox approach.
However it was in his watercolor work that he became truly free to express his artistic spirit and his vision of brilliant sunlight playing off nature's subjects.
