Welcome to "Dr. File Finder's Picks" here on Simtel. I've been reviewing software since 1982 and every week I see some really interesting products. So, each week I'm going to tell you about some neat programs that I've looked at recently. I hope you'll find these reviews useful. And remember, if you try a shareware program, and find yourself using it, pay the author. In that way, shareware works for all of us. And now, on with the show!
One great tool that I reviewed is another one of those that I end up using just about every day, and that's IrfanView by Irfan Skiljan. It has drag and drop support, a preview option, and even a slideshow presentation. It's an image viewer and it can also convert images between a wide range of graphics file formats. IrfanView supports the following file formats: GIF, JPEG, BMP, PCX, DIB, RLE, TIFF, PNG, ICO, AVI, TGA, RAS/SUN, WAV, MID, RMI, WMF, EMF, PBM, PGM, PPM, and Photo-CD. It can also display animated GIF files and do batch conversions from one graphics format to another. And, for non-commercial use, IrfanView is FREE and loaded with options. Check it out!
Anyone who wants more power from the Windows clipboard needs to investigate ClipMate, by ThornSoft Development. Normally the Windows clipboard only holds one piece of information at a time. When you "copy" or "cut" something new, the previous item is lost! ClipMate expands the clipboard and remembers every item you place in the clipboard. That includes text and graphics. If you have clips that you'd like to use often, perhaps in email, you can create collections within the program. Store your most frequently used clips in a "safe" collection and you don't have to worry about them being accidentally deleted. You can also print your clips, edit them, and lots more. ClipMate can even reformat quoted sections of email and remove all of the ">" quote symbols. A great way to clean-up jokes and other material you get via email. Really excellent!
To learn the geography of the United States, all of the states, and their capitals, take a good look at Animated States And Capitals, by FLIX Productions. This program helps students learn the states and capitals in a fun way. It teaches the states, the capitals of each state, and in the process, you learn about the U.S. geography as well! And, every time you get ten questions right, you get rewarded with a very cool 3D animation. The level of difficulty can be changed to meet the needs of the student, which makes Animated States and Capitals extremely flexible. And, you can take the states by region -- eastern, central, and western -- if you don't want to take them on all at once. Animated States And Capitals is a wonderful program for teaching students the geography of the United States, including all of the states and their capitals. Take a look -- it's beautifully done!
