Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Welcome back!! And welcome to October! I'm glad you stopped by to take a look at my Picks for this week. As always, I've looked at a lot of really good software and I'm here to tell you about some great products. I hope you'll take the time to download these and try them out for yourself. So without further ado, lets take a look!

  • Animated Beginning Typing

Animated Beginning Typing, by FLIX Productions, is a really slick typing tutor with younger typists in mind. Nowdays kids are getting on computers younger and younger. And, if they're going to be on one, they may as well know how to type correctly! This program is meant for kids from pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade and it does a beautiful job. First of all, it shows them how to place their hands. The program also uses some cool animation and sound effects to help with the teaching. And, that makes teaching fun! Heck, even I had fun with it.

One nice feature is that a keyboard is right there on the screen for them. That helps them to associate what they're looking at with what they're typing on. Another way Animated Beginning Typing makes learning fun is through games! Where was this when I was learning to type? The "Letter Drill" lets the child pick anywhere from 20 to 120 letters to practice. When they finish they get a report on their progress and a cartoon. Cool! Another neat exercise is called "Flying Letters" and this one is really for the child who's been at it for awhile. I think it's neat because the child picks the speed of the game. Lastly, there's a simple exercise called "Jumping Letters" which is really good for the younger learners to start out with. Lets them have fun while they're learning.

Animated Beginning Typing, by FLIX Productions, is a beautifully done educational program for young children. It can teach them to type and let them have some fun in the process. The program is laced with funny cartoons, crawly critters, and much more. Another great feature is that the child picks the level of difficulty. So, if you have a child who would love to be able to type, you need to get this program for them! A beautiful piece of programming and animation that's sure to be a winner at your house! I recommend it highly!

  • Showcalc
  • Version: 4.10
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/
  • Get more info.
  • Download Showcalc NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Showcalc, click here!

Showcalc, by Mark Chatters, is a very nice tape calculator that I use all the time. And there are a number of things I really like about it. To begin with, it's more than just a calculator. Besides all of the basic functions that most everyone wants, it also has all of your most common scientific functions. And if you want, you can "hide" that part of the calculator. That gives the entire calculator a slimer profile. And, there's a new version, 5.0, that can do a huge number of conversions. You can convert mass, volume, force, pressure, speed, temperature, torque, area, and lots more. Really impressive.

The feature I really like is the scrolling tape. Why? Because you can do so much with it. For one, you can utilize the tape in four different formats -- general, scientific, fixed, and currency. I also like the fact that you can put in annotations. That lets you clarify what's on your tape -- "Car payment", "Dog food", and so on. The tape can also be printed, and saved as a text file. This is great for sharing information with someone else. Showcalc also has a built-in tax function, so you can enter the tax for your area -- 3%, 10% or whatever. You can also configure the colors that are used in the tape. Very slick! Lastly, the program has a "zoom" feature that lets you double the size of the calculator and that makes it great for people with vision problems like macular degeneration.

Showcalc, by Mark Chatters, is a nicely done calculator program that can meet a wide range of needs. It has all the functions of a good scientific calculator and the best features of a basic one. The tape function is very flexible and is loaded with features -- hide it, print it, save it, or change the colors it uses. Showcalc can handle currency as well as being able to do a wide range of conversions. I looked around for a long time before I found a calculator I was really pleased with, and this is it! So, if you're looking for an inexpensive calculator that has a tape and some flexibility, check it out! I recommend it.

  • MemoryBoost Pro
  • Version: 2.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/
  • Get more info.
  • Download MemoryBoost Pro NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of MemoryBoost Pro, click here!

MemoryBoost Pro, by Rose City Software, is an excellent program for helping your computer to run better and faster. It seems like many people have problems with memory. Either too little, or too many programs going at one time. Another problem is that some programs stay in memory after you close them. That means the memory they used is still being used. MemoryBoost Pro takes care of that by freeing up that memory and letting you control it. I've participated in the beta tests of MemoryBoost Pro and I've really been impressed with the way it works and it takes quite a bit to impress me. It has some many excellent features that I'm just going to touch on some of them.

MemoryBoost Pro is really loaded with great features. For one, it has a "Detective" section that shows you each program that's running and how much memory each program is using. This can be a huge help because you might decide to shut down some programs you have been running all the time that are real memory hogs. Another neat feature is that the program gives you real-time statistics on your memory usage. It shows you what resources you have free, how your CPU is doing, and lots more. One very cool feature is the ability to optimize how your computer utilizes memory. You can define how much is used by the cache, and more. And there's a handy wizard to take you through the entire process. Very nicely done! The program sits in your system tray, letting you know how much memory is available and even letting you give it a "boost" when needed.

MemoryBoost Pro, by Rose City Software, is a powerful, full-featured program for managing your computers memory. At the same time, it's extremely easy-to-use. I personally think it's great for both new and experienced users. Experienced users can tweak it on their own, while novice users can feel secure knowing that the program will take care of things for them. The program provides you with plenty of information and helps keep your computer running smoothly. Back in the early 1980's someone said "You can never have too much RAM or too much disk space." Truer words were never spoken. So, if you'd like some help making your computer run faster and more efficiently, give MemoryBoost Pro a try. It's the best memory management program I've tried! Check it out for yourself.

Well, that brings us to a close for this week. I hope you've enjoyed reading about these products and much as I enjoyed writing about them. All of them are excellent, and I really hope you'll give them a try. As we move into October, I'll be looking at lots more software! And, I'll be back next week to tell you about some of the best I've seen. I hope you'll join me. Until then, have a great week, be safe, and happy downloading.
