Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Hi there!! First of all, I hope everyone had a happy and safe Thanksgiving Day. I know many people got together with family and friends to share the day. And, by the same token, I'm going to share some great Picks with you today! As always, I've been busy downloading lots of software and trying to find some really excellent ones to tell you about. And I think I've accomplished that goal. So, take a load off your feet, relax, and lets take a look!

  • File-Ex
  • Version: 3.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download File-Ex NOW!

File-Ex, by Cottonwood Software, is one of my all-time personal favorite programs. And now, there's a new version! You might ask, well what does it do? Good question. The primary thing that File-Ex does is add a great deal of functionality to the "Save-As" and "File Open" dialog boxes in Windows. With the dialogs that come with Windows, you basically have to navigate around and find the file you want to open. You also have to do the same thing when you want to save a file. Most people have folders that they use over and over again -- for graphics, documents, and the like. File-Ex keeps track of those places and makes them easy to access. The program provides you with a listing of "Recent Files Used" and another with "Recent Folders Used". This makes it a snap to quickly access those places. In addition, you can have a list of "Favorite Files" as well as a list of "Favorite Folders". Very slick!

File-Ex lets you add your personal favorites to the "Favorite Folders" and "Favorite Files" listings, and that makes you much more productive. And keep in mind, these are kept on a program by program basis. So, the lists for your text editor wouldn't be the same as the lists for your graphics editor. That gives you real power and flexibility. Another really excellent feature is that File-Ex gives you instant access to common file management tasks. Yep, that's right. When you click a File Open dialog, for example, you get access to a host of features. Do things like make directories (folders), delete files, rename files, and copy files. You also have access to a very nice "Find Files" feature. So, File-Ex not only makes it quick and easy, but tosses in extra convenience. The program is also available in German as well as Portuguese.

File-Ex, by Cottonwood Software, is a really handy tool. It works with nearly every program and makes it easy to quickly open or save files. With each and every program you use it gives you quick access to the files and folders you use most, and that's a really great convenience. It helps you to work faster and more efficiently. I've looked at a number of programs that do similar things and for my money, File-Ex is the best I've seen! So, give it a try. I think you'll like it as much as I do!

  • SurfSaver
  • Version: 2.3
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download SurfSaver NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of SurfSaver, click here!

SurfSaver, by askSam Systems, is a nifty add-on for your Web browser! And if you surf the 'net as much as I do, I think you'll like this program. What's it do? Well, it lets you save Web pages, on-the-fly, to your hard disk. Speaking for myself, I'm busy and often don't have time to read everything I see on the Internet. At least not right at the moment I see it. And that's where SurfSaver comes in. For example, in the screen shot I'm on the ABC News Web page. I'd like to read it, but I don't have time right now. SurfSaver lets me save the entire page. With all the graphics, all the links. Everything! So, later, I can open Internet Explorer and do a search. When I find the ABC News page I saved, I can read all the news I want. It can be two weeks from now and I can still have access to a news story that I saved. Very slick! The program lets you archive anything you want off the Internet -- news, game tips, recipes, sale items. You name it!

SurfSaver, as I said earlier, is an add-on for your Web browser. It becomes a part of your browser toolbar, so it's always right at hand. And what it's really doing is creating a database of Web pages right on your computer. And a searchable database at that! And the search feature is extremely powerful. You can search for text, like "News". Or, you can search on a range of dates, like November 1, 2002 through November 22, 2002. You can also use Boolean operators like AND, OR, and NOT. Search by the Web URL (Universal Resource Locator), or a list of keywords. SurfSaver makes it easy to find exactly what you want. And besides being great for everyday things, SurfSaver is wonderful for anyone who's doing research. Think about it. Go out, find what you're looking for, and save it all to your hard disk. It's all there, waiting for you to read, to print, to search, and more! Nothing could be easier.

SurfSaver, by askSam Systems, is a powerful tool the becomes a part of your Web browser. It lets you store the contents of Web pages right on your computer. At the same time, it has the power of a database and it lets you search, and find, exactly what you're looking for. The power of the search function is impressive. I'd say that SurfSaver is a handy tool for anyone and it's a must-have tool for anyone who's doing research! I've looked at a lot of "browser add-ons", but this is one that has become a permanent part of my browsers. If you're busy, or doing research of any kind, take a good look at SurfSaver! I give it my highest recommendation!

  • Holiday Lights
  • Version: 5.3
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Holiday Lights NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Holiday Lights, click here!

Holiday Lights, by Tiger Technologies, is a neat program that puts a little fun in your desktop. At this holiday season why not decorate your desktop like you decorate your house? Why not indeed! Holiday Lights makes it easy-to-do. With a couple of clicks you can have Christmas bulbs all around your desktop screen! And the program comes with an amazing variety of bulbs. I think there are over forty (40) different styles of bulbs. And not just for Christmas either. You can pick things like snowmen, chili peppers, stockings, and more. For other holidays you can have turkeys, hearts (Valentine's Day) and even jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. And remember, this isn't just a screen saver -- the program is working right while you are. That means you get to enjoy the color. Oh, and did I mention the music?

That's right, Holiday Lights also provides you with background music. And believe me, that really sets the mood for the holidays. The program comes with about thirty (30) traditional songs, and you can even download more from the company Web site. And actually, you can use any MIDI format files that you may have. Just imagine it. The holiday lights are flashing and the Christmas music is playing softly in the background while you work. Really puts me in the holiday mood. And, just think, you can pick what songs you listen to! When the work day is done, the program also has a screen saver that will come on for you. And, it continues the holiday festivities! Very cool!

Holiday Lights, by Tiger Technologies, is a neat program that will help to get you in the holiday spirit. With a wide variety of lights, a nice assortment of music, and a screen saver, it's a complete holiday package. All wrapped up and just waiting for you! So, get yourself in that holiday mood and give it a try! I think you'll really like it.

Well, that's all for this week. I really hope you enjoyed these Picks and that you give them a try. All of them are excellent programs and well worth the download time. And remember, if you find yourself using a shareware program, be sure to pay for it. That way the shareware concept works for everyone. I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, I hope all of you have a great weekend. Be safe, be kind, and happy downloading!
