Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Welcome!! I'm really glad you stopped by. Over the past year I've looked at a lot of really excellent programs. I've looked at utilities, applications, games, and lots more. And I've told you about a number of them. With the year 2002 winding down, I'd like to spend the next 3 weeks doing a "roundup" of those programs that I liked the best! Lets call them Doc's 2002 Favorites. Software is always a matter of personal taste, but these programs are all very unique and special. I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do. So, to start us off, I'm going to point out my very favorite applications. Lets take a look!

  • NoteTab Pro
  • Version: 4.91
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

In the course of any given day, I work with a lot of text. For doing that I use a text editor and I believe I've looked at just about every one that's available. The one I use, however, is NoteTab Pro, by Fookes Software. Nearly all of the text I write is done in this powerful, yet easy-to-use text editor. Even text that I may later put into a full-fledged word processor like Microsoft Word is written in NoteTab. And yes, my "Dr. File Finder's Picks" are written in it every week. The program is simply loaded with features and you can use the ones that you like best. Load multiple documents, bookmarks, a powerful search and replace, and plenty more. It's "clip" feature gives it tons of power. Over the years I've used a lot of text editors and to date this is the best one I've found. It's also excellent for doing HTML code.

  • Black Hole Organizer
  • Version: 2.02
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Black Hole Organizer NOW!

It's a standard joke that I'm always doing multiple things at once. Reading emails, writing reviews, submitting programs, talking on the phone, ICQing, and the like. Lots of varied information. And for dealing with information on-the-fly I use Black Hole Organizer by Lincoln Beach Software. It's great for handling all types of "free form" information like registration codes, phone numbers, links to Web pages, and lot more. Black Hole has a full-featured editor so I can put entries in bold, italic, underlined, and so on. You can create any number of categories and subcategories within the program. This makes it easy to divide your data into groups that make sense to you. My favorite feature is called the "floater." The floater sits on my desktop and I can add things to the database, using the floater, without opening the database. And my work is saved instantly. Black Hole Organizer is a great tool for keeping track of all your information. I t's ALWAYS on my desktop.

  • SureThing CD Labeler
  • Version: 3.1.2
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

I burn a lot of CDs. I send out programs to people, give them away when I speak at user group meetings, send them out to press contacts, and so on. And in my mind for labeling CDs, there only is one product and that's SureThing CD Labeler , by MicroVision Development. It lets you do everything you want and need to do with CD labels. Create, edit, and print beautiful color labels for all of your CD's. Print labels for jewel cases, DVD's, and more. It makes the entire process so easy that absolutely anyone can do it! Even the "graphically challenged" like me. SureThing CD Labeler has truly extensive support for music playlists. The latest version of CD Labeler also features "SureThing Playlist Plus!" This really cool feature lets users of Windows Media Player print colorful labels right from their Media Player playlists! Very slick! The templates in SureThing CD Labeler are called "SmartDesigns" and they really take the guess-work out of creating lab els. It comes with a huge number of backgrounds and clipart. It's the only CD labeling program you'll ever need and truly one of my personal favorites!

  • Microangelo
  • Version: 5.56
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

  • Download Microangleo NOW!

If you like to do anything at all with icons you need to take a good look at another of my favorite programs -- Microangelo, by Impact Software. This is the only program to ever win a Shareware Industry Award 3 years in a row! It also won the People's Choice Award for "Most Votes On Simtel. Microangleo has different sections. The Librarianou, the Studio, the Explorer, and the Animator. That's right, you can even animate icons with this powerful tool. The Librarian helps you to manage icon files no matter where they are. The Studio lets you create, or edit, your icon images. You can create images from scratch or edit and alter existing images. The Explorer helps you find icons on your system. And lastly, the Animator gives you the power to easily add animation to your icons. This is the most impressive program I've ever seen for working with icon graphics in Windows. It's unique sections are integrated beautifully, so the program is eas y-to-use. You have to try it for yourself. This is not only a favorite of mine, but it's also a favorite of software developers and users!

If you're looking for a program that is amazing at creating thumbnails from your graphics, check out Easy Thumbnails by Fookes Software. First of all, it's FREE which makes what it does even more impressive. The program can work with a wide range of graphics file formats and it gives you a lot of options. You can take an image and fine tune it by changing things like brightness and contrast. You can also adjust the sharpness of an image or rotate it into a different position. The program has a handy viewer built-in, so you can see your changes as you make them. And Easy Thumbnails is really fast! When you create your thumbnails you can pick from nine (9) different methods, including Lanczos3 -- which is very popular with professionals. Do thumbnails in big batches because Easy Thumbnails can handle it. Easy Thumbnails, by Fookes Software, is a beautifully done program that's absolutely free! I've looked at all kinds of programs for creating thumbna ils and this is the one I use because it's simply loaded with great features.
