Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Reviewed by Dr. File Finder
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that all of you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous year ahead of you. As for me, I'm back reviewing some really interesting software. I hope all of you enjoyed the year-end review and my Dr. File Finder Favorites. From time to time, during 2003, when I encounter a really special program, I'll give it that "Favorite" designation, but that won't happen very often. Right now, I've got some neat programs to tell you about. So, relax, grab a cup of coffee, and lets take a look!

  • BurnQuick
  • Version: 2.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download BurnQuick NOW!

BurnQuick, by Triton Interactive, is quite simply one of the most clever and useful little tools I've found in a long time. It was pointed out to me by Don Watkins and I decided to try it out. And is it ever slick. BurnQuick becomes a part of the "right-click" menu and is perfect for anyone who works with files, and that would be most of you. Now, don't expect to have a lot of bells and whistles with this program because there aren't any. In fact, to me, it's real attraction is its simplicity. In fact, it's so simple there isn't much of a screen shot to look at.

BurnQuick is always at hand in Windows Explorer or whatever file manager you might use. When I have files that I want to save I can just right-click on that file. In the right-click menu you find the BurnQuick commands. You can elect to burn a file to CD, or put it in a queue. If you elect to have a queue, you can "view" it at your leisure. You can also burn the entire queue to CD, or you can also clear the queue and start over. And you don't just have to work on a file by file basis, I've selected entire directories (folders) for burning. And CDs are so easy-to-use. Around here they've basically replaced floppy disks. So, a program like BurnQuick is perfect for being there when you need it and for not being there when you don't! Use it to save important files -- documents, spreadsheet, program files, music, or whatever you like, and do it all on-the-fly! Excellent!

BurnQuick, by Triton Interactive, is an extremely handy and useful tool. It's perfect for burning files to CD either one at a time or in bunches. This isn't a program that's going to dazzle you with it's flashy graphics, but it will dazzle you with how well it works! If you're like me and you've come to use CDs in place of floppy disks, then this is a tool you want to have. So, give it a try and see just how easy burning files to CD can be!!

  • PicoZip
  • Version: 2.02
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download PicoZip NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of PicoZip, click here!

PicoZip, by Softchitect, is a program for working with and creating compressed files that has a clean, intuitive interface. I found the program very easy-to-use and that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. It has a number of interesting features that put it a step above many other compression programs, at least to me. For example, it makes it extremely easy to do backups. At the same time it can also integrate with your email, work in batch mode, and convert from a wide variety of compression formats. I've looked at a lot of similar programs and found this one to be more appealing than most. Nicely done!

PicoZip, like many similar programs, has support for a huge number of compressed file formats including ZIP, LZH, JAR, CAB, ARC, ARJ, LHA, RAR, TAR, and many more! In fact, it can extract files from fifteen (15) different compression formats and create them for seven (7). At the same time it can create "self-extracting" files from eight (8) of the different compression formats. So, for working with most kinds of compressed files, PicoZip has you covered! I was impressed by the way the program provided for doing backups. Like many "backup" programs, it allows for the creation of "backup sets" which makes it extremely easy to backup. I found that once a backup set was created I could initiate a backup with just a few clicks of the mouse. Impressive!

PicoZip, by Softchitect, is a powerful tool for working with compressed files, yet it's also easy-to-use. It has support for a wide variety of compression formats. At the same time, it makes it easy to generate self-extracting files and do regular backups. PicoZip can convert from one format to another, integrate with email, and process batches of files. So, if you're looking for a program for working with compressed files, take a good look at PicoZip -- very well done!

  • Handy Backup
  • Version: 3.9
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Handy Backup NOW!

Handy Backup, by Novosoft, Inc., is a powerful program for backing up your data. At the same time, I found it extremely easy-to-use and intuitive. It also gives you a variety of options as to where you'll backup your data. You can, for example, select from backing up to another drive on your LAN (local area network), to an FTP site, or to CD-R or CD-RW discs. And unlike most other backup programs I've looked at, this one has support for special "plug-ins". Very slick. The plug-ins make it easier to backup things like the Windows Registry, ICQ, and Microsoft Outlook. It keeps a log of everything you do, lets you drag and drop from Windows Explorer, and lots more!

Handy Backup comes with ZIP compression that's integrated right into the program. At the same time it also has support for 128-bit encryption, so your stored data is always safe. One feature that I really liked was the fact that the program supports "spanning" of discs. That means that if your data exceeds the size of your first CD, your backup doesn't just stop. Instead, the program prompts you to give it another CD. With this feature, you can have huge backups and have them span multiple CDs. Very slick! Handy Backup also has a nifty scheduler which I found to be extremely flexible. It also gives you an option to do your backups when you log off your computer or when you log on. A nice option to have. The program also puts an icon in your system tray, shows you its progress, and works nicely in the background.

Handy Backup, by Novosoft, Inc., is a nicely engineered piece of software. Its designed to backup all of your important data and it does that job very well. The program has a number of useful and also interesting features, like the use of plug-ins. I found Handy Backup to be very easy-to-use and feel that even novice users would do well with it. It can backup to drives on your network, your FTP site, as well as to CDs. And, it can span CDs so your backups aren't limited. So, if you've been looking for a program for backing up your data, give Handy Backup a try! I think you'll like it -- I did!

Well, for the first week in 2003 that brings us to a close. I hope you enjoyed reading about these programs as much as I enjoyed writing about them for you. All of them are excellent products and well worth the time to download. Give them a try. And remember, if you try a "shareware" program, and find yourself using it, be sure to pay the author. In this way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, have a great week and Happy 2003!
