Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Greetings and Salutations!
I'm glad you've stopped by to take a look at my Picks for this week. It was easy writing about them because all of them are excellent. And because I was snowed in. With five feet of snow around the house, you don't go very far unless you have snowshoes, which I don't. So, I looked at a lot of great software instead, and these are the ones I decided to tell you about. So, if you're all set, sit back, relax, and lets take a look!

  • Directory Opus
  • Version: 6.2
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Directory Opus NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Directory Opus, click here!

Directory Opus, by GPSoftware, is a powerful tool for working with all the files on your computer. This is no simple file manager and the program is loaded with features. So many features, in fact, that I'm just going to try to hit the high-points for you. To begin with, the program has built-in support for handling ZIP files. You don't need any other tool. Slick. At the same time, it also has built-in FTP, so you can connect to you FTP sites right from within the program. It also has a built-in "viewer pane" where you can see the contents of spreadsheets, graphics files, Word documents, plain text, and lots more. Very nicely done.

Directory Opus has many configurable options, and you know I like that. You can, for example, configure the toolbar and arrange the icons the way you want. At the same time, you can also configure hot keys, menus and more! Plus, you can have toolbars that are attached or floating. You can also configure colors, panel layouts, what plug-ins are active and much, much more. Don't want PDF files to load for you automatically? Then just turn that feature off. And the program supports a large number of plug-ins. Another feature I really liked was the programs support for digital images, like the ones from your digital camera. Directory Opus gives you all the information about each photo -- things like shutter speed, time, aperture, and more. And if all this weren't enough it has very powerful search capabilities, an internal command set, and even activity associated sounds -- something I haven't seen in any similar programs. Excellent!

Directory Opus, by GPSoftware, is an extremely powerful file manager. It has a large number of features built right in so it's really a complete package. Built-in support for FTP, ZIP files, digital images, an array of graphics and sound formats, and a handy viewer. The plug-ins it provides are impressive, as are its configurable options. So, this is, in many ways, much more than just a file manager. If you've been looking for a replacement for Windows Explorer and you want something with lot of power under the hood, take a good look at Directory Opus. One of the very best programs I've seen this year. Try it!

  • Tweaki...for Power Users
  • Version: 4.2.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Tweaki...for Power Users NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Tweaki...for Power Users, click here!

Tweaki...for Power Users, by JerMar Software Corp, is a great program for anyone who likes to "tweak" the way Windows works. It offers a huge range of items that you can configure to suit your needs. Or just to suit your whim of the week. And, unlike some similar products, it provides you with operating system specific options for Windows ME, 2000, and XP. You can change the title bar in Internet Explorer and even fix it so your Internet "cache" is cleaned out startup. Same for your "history". You can customize boot options, disable items from loading in Control Panel, and lots, lots more. Don't want every folder to look the same in Explorer? You can change it. And with Tweaki...for Power Users you can change a lot of things!

Tweaki...for Power Users lets you alter so many items that I couldn't possibly list them all. The key thing is that it lets you makes Windows look and act a little bit more the way you want it to. And I've always been a big fan of customization. With "Tweaki" you can do things like stop programs from loading at startup, get rid of the arrows in shortcuts, make your Num Lock key come on when your computer starts, lock Windows, backup your drivers, and disable a lot of things that load "just because." You can make your own "right-click" menus that are context sensitive! Assign multiple IP addresses to one NIC card, and more. WHat can I say? This baby really lets you get into Windows and "tweak" to your hearts content.

Tweaki...for Power Users, by JerMar Software Corp, is a powerful tool that lets you change the way Windows, and other programs, work and look. It's loaded with so many options, and possibilities, you won't believe it until you see it for yourself. And, if you change something and don't like it, the program even has an "undo" function so you can go back to where you started. Another cool feature is that you can even make changes to any computer on your network, not just one where the program is installed. So, if there are things you'd like to change about Windows, you owe it to yourself to take a good look at Tweaki! Truly excellent -- I recommend it!

  • Compass
  • Version: 2.83
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Compass NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Compass, click here!

Compass, by Softgauge.Com, is a powerful, yet easy-to-use manager for all of your Internet bookmarks. Personally, I don't keep a lot of bookmarks because I remember all of them, but my wife really has a ton of them. Bookmarks for sewing-related things, bookmarks for graduate school, bookmarks for medical-related things, and lots more. And Compass handled them in a snap. I really like the fact that it can handle the bookmarks from the most popular Web browsers -- Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Opera. And it lets you open, save, export, import, and even merge bookmarks! Very slick! And if you want, you can password protect your bookmarks so no one but you can access them. Ahh, but there's more.

Compass actively supports "drag and drop" so you can drag bookmarks from the desktop, from your browser, and more, with ease. Another neat feature is the ability to use "templates". That means that you can export your bookmarks and have them formatted the way you want. And you know how much I like that! And, you can create your own templates, so you can experiment. And at the same time, you can elect to have Compass display things in two different styles ... it's own style and that of Explorer. Really nice to have options. Another feature I really liked is the powerful search capabilities. This is great for finding duplicate links to the same URL (Universal Resource Locator) or just for finding what you're looking for. The search function even supports the use of operands .. NOT, OR, AND. Impressive!

Compass, by Softgauge.Com, is a powerful little program that's very easy-to-use. The interface is intuitive and that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. In my opinion, it has all the features you need to manage even thousands of bookmarks. It gives you the ability to import, export, edit, delete, search, generate reports, and so much more. And, to top it off, it supports Opera, Netscape, and Internet Explorer -- and I have all 3. So, if your bookmarks are out-of-control, take a very good look at Compass. It's nicely done and one of the best programs of its kind. Try it!

Well, I guess that's all we have time for this week. Never seems to be enough time. And on top of that, we have another blizzard hitting here today! I hope you enjoyed these Picks and I also hope you'll take the time to give them a try. And remember, if you try a shareware program, and find yourself using it, be sure to pay for it. That way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I'm off for now, but I'll be back next week with more Picks, just for you. Until then, have a great weekend, and happy downloading.
