Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Greetings and Welcome! I'm glad you stopped by to take a look at my Picks for this week. As we move into Spring the weather is getting nicer and nicer. Lots of warm days and even some rain to help those flowers grow. Of course, I've been stuck here in my office working hard. And, at the same time looking at lots of great software to tell you about. I've got some interesting Picks for this week and I hope you'll like them. So, if you're ready, sit back, relax, and lets take a look.

  • Wordware
  • Version: 2002a
  • System Requirements: Windows 3.x/95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Wordware NOW!

Wordware, by AMF, is a really powerful add-on program for Microsoft Word for Windows. And when I say powerful, I really mean it. This product gives Word all kinds of muscle it doesn't have normally, and lots of great, new features as well. For example, you get a full-featured PIM (Personal Information Manager) to help keep you on track. Another really excellent feature is that the program gives you the ability to manage all your files right from within Microsoft Word. Very slick and an ability that Word, by default, is seriously lacking.

Wordware also provides you with some really cool templates for making things like disk labels, business cards, and lots more! And the results are excellent. The program also helps you to keep track of and manager people, Web sites, and even projects. And if all this weren't enough, Wordware also provides you with tools for backing up your Word documents, doing faxes, and more! And, to keep you entertained while you work, the program even has a built-in CD player -- how cool is that? Very! And all of the wonderful features are available right from the Word toolbar -- so features are never more than a couple of mouse clicks away.

Wordware, by AMF, is a powerful add-on for Microsoft Word. And while powerful, the program is extremely easy-to-use. I find the user interface to be very intuitive, and that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. It provides Word with lots of wonderful features that it doesn't have on its own. From templates, to file management, to the CD player, this is one complete package for beefing up your copy of Word. So, if you've been looking for some of these features, and you use Microsoft Word, this is the program you're looking for. Give it a try -- I recommend it!

  • WebPop
  • Version: 1.11
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download WebPop NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of WebPop, click here!

Webpop, by Mailgov, is a nifty program for dealing with all of the different Web-based email facilities. You know, places online where you can do email right from your browser. Places like Yahoo, Hotmail, and others. It gets to be a real pain having to go to each site, log in, and check your email. Well, with Webpop the pain is over! That's right -- this slick little program lets you retrieve all of your Web-based email right from your regular email client. Slick! And it works with just about any email client, including The Bat!, Eudora, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Incredimail, and many others.

Webpop is very easy to install and extremely easy-to-use. The interface is intuitive enough that the program can be used by both new and experienced users. One thing that I really liked was the way the program walks you through setting up your email program. It takes you through it step-by-step so it's very clear. Once setup, the program operates primarily in the background. When it really kicks in is when you go to get your Web-based email. Oh, and did I mention that Webpop can also retrieve your AOL email?? Very slick! And by using Webpop, you can have the benefits of using a full-featured email client while still taking advantage of free email sources like Hotmail and Yahoo.

Webpop, by Mailgov, is a handy utility that serves a very specific purpose. The program gives you a way to use a standard email program to send and receive all of your Web-based email. The program is intuitive and extremely easy-to-use. This is aided by the step-by-step setup instructions that the program provides. If you take advantage of online, Web-based email, or use America Online, Webpop provides you with the luxury of using an email client that has many more features than your Web-based email provides. So, if you're one of the millions of people who use Web-based email, take a really good look at Webpop. It truly lets you have your cake and eat it too. Give it a try!

  • Readerware
  • Version: 2.82
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Readerware NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Readerware, click here!

Readerware, by Readerware Corporation, is a truly impressive program for cataloging all of your music, books, and videos. Over the years I've looked at lots of "catalog" programs and this one is really first-rate! And it's so easy-to-use that I think it's perfect for anyone -- new or experienced user. What makes it so cool, and so efficient, is that you can enter information in so many ways. Have a lot of books? Just enter the ISBN number and the program finds that book on the Web. Slick. Even slicker is the fact that it provides all the information -- title, author, description, keywords, and lots more. No typing it in and that's a real time saver.

Readerware can work with you directly online to catalog books. When I tested it I was in my office. Take a look at the screen shot. Those are all books that are in my book collection. All I did was search for them on Amazon, drag the Web link to the program, and viola! The data was brought into the program. What could be easier? Nothing! And what's really slick is that if a book you enter is still in print, Readerware doesn't just give you all the information, it also gives you a picture of the cover! I have to say, I was very impressed. And you can do the same thing with your favorite CDs or DVDs. The program really consists of three parts -- Readerware for books, ReaderwareVW for videos, and ReaderwareAW for music.

Readerware, by Readerware Corporation, is really a powerful program that's so easy-to-use that it seems simple. You can obtain the data in a variety of ways. Drag and drop from the Web, enter ISBN numbers, and if you have a barcode scanner, you can even scan the information in. The program makes it extremely easy to create databases of all your favorite books, music, and video. And compared to the old days of typing in all the information, this is a snap. The program even has support for Palm, so you can put your database on your PDA. Really impressive and I don't get impressed very easily any more. So, I'm not just making Readerware a Pick, but also a Dr. File Finder Favorite and those are few and far between. So, if you have collections of music, books, movies, you need to give this program a try. I recommend it highly! Well done.

Hx - In the early days of computers, back when DOS ruled the planet, and shareware was being born, one of the first programs was a database. That database was PC File, by Jim Button -- one of the three men who came up with the shareware marketing concept. Later, there were a number of specialized databases - for coins, books, stamps, and so on. But improved technology and the Internet, allow a database like Readerware to be as powerful as it is. My, how things have changed. -- Doc

Sadly, that brings us to a close for this week. I really could write about software all day, but I have to eat. I hope you enjoyed reading about these programs as much as I enjoyed writing about them. All of them are excellent, so take the time to download them and give them a try. Each of them are well worth the download time. I'm off for now, but I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, have a wonderful week, a great weekend, and happy downloading.
