Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Greetings and Welcome Back! I'm really glad you took the time to stop by to look at this weeks Picks. I've got some really neat programs to tell you about. I'm working on them right now because it's Springtime in the Rockies, and we're having a minor blizzard and that's wiping out my satellite connection to the Internet. So, a great time to sit and write about some really great software. These are some excellent programs, so if you're ready, sit back, put your feet up, and lets take a look!

  • Advanced Call Center
  • Version: 3.5
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Advanced Call Center NOW!

Advanced Call Center, by Oleg Afonin, is a neat program that works with your voice modem to give you a full-feature phone system. And I do mean full-featured. A great way to let your modem do the work and provide you with an answering machine and more. I found the program to be very easy to set up and quite intuitive to use. And its got lots of cool functions. For example, you can record your own custom "greeting" that callers will hear, or use on that comes with the program. Another excellent feature is support for "Caller ID". Bear in mind that this function only works if you've arranged for Caller ID through your phone company. And when a call comes it, a little window actually pops up to tell you who's calling and what their phone number is. Slick!!

Advanced Call Center keeps track of every call and stores all of the information in an easily accessible log. The program will also let you monitor incoming calls -- what some people refer to as "screening." Another feature that you might find handy is the ability to record a conversation. A quick way to save an important conversation for later reference. And, if all this weren't enough, there's still more! That's right! Advanced Call Center even has the ability to notify you about calls by sending a notification to your pager. And if that doesn't impress you, how about sending you a voice message by email? Very cool. You can create "whitelists" of callers you prefer, a "blacklist" of callers you don't, an you can even set up the program to block certain types of calls -- even if you don't have Caller ID! Excellent!

Advanced Call Center, by Oleg Afonin, is a powerful program for handling phone calls that's also easy-to-use. I think it's perfect for both new and experienced users. It has support for a wide range of internal and external voice modems. At the same time it also provides support for Caller ID - which you have to have through your local phone company. You can record calls, be notified of calls via pager or email, and block calls you don't want to receive. So, if you'd like to try out an alternative to a conventional "answering machine" and deal with phone messages on your computer, this is the program to try! Check it out for yourself -- I recommend it.

  • Mach5 Mailer Free
  • Version: TWedit
  • System Requirements: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Mach5 Mailer Free NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Mach5 Mailer Free, click here!

Mach5 Mailer Free, by Mach5 Enterprises, is a bulk email program that's loaded with features. And, for those on a budget, this version of the program is also free! And, with this free version you can do up to 200 messages at one time. The program is perfect if you need to send out personalized versions of the same material to a large number of people. So, for example, it would be great for handling your church newsletter, your Scout troop monthly bulletin, and lots more! The program offers support for a wide variety of databases and data sources including Microsoft Access and Excel! Another cool feature is that the program will let you do messages that are plain text, contain HTML coding, or a combination of both. I also liked the fact that you can schedule your mailing for a time when it's convenient for you or for when Internet traffic is down.

Mach5 Mailer Free has a very nice "preview" function which lets you see exactly what the recipient will see - a nice feature to have. Another really neat feature is that not only can the program send emails with attachments, but that each email can have a different file attached. An excellent way to distribute a common email message while sending each person a different file. Very nicely done. The program also included another program called "POPMonger" which monitors your POP mailbox. This allows it to effectively deal with such things as requests to "unsubscribe", bounced emails, or attempts that failed. Plus, Mach5 lets you use your own SMTP server or you can use the one that's built-in to the program. Always nice to have options.

Mach5 Mailer Free, by Mach5 Enterprises, is a powerful bulk email program that's absolutely free. It gives you the power to send out personalized emails to a large number of people and even send each one a unique attachment. It offers support for a wide range of popular databases, support for HTML, and gives you lots of configurable options. The program comes in three versions -- Free, Regular, and Gold so you can pick the version that's just right for you. So, if you'd like to send out custom emails to your group or organization give Mach5 Mailer Free a try. Not only is it free, but it does an excellent job! Check it out!

  • Secure Disk
  • Version: 1.0
  • System Requirements: Windows NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Secure Disk NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Secure Disk, click here!

SecureDisk, by Wekasoft, is a nifty program that lets you create "virtual" disks on your computer. What's really cool about it is that these virtual disks appear just like all the regular drives on your computer. Each disk can be password protected and the files that you store in these disks are encrypted! That means that all your data is safe and secure and no one else can access it. And the encryption is very fast -- so fast I couldn't even detect it working. Another great feature is that under Windows 2000,NT, and XP SecureDisk offers support for FAT, FAT32, and NTFS systems. Very slick!

SecureDisk lets you "mount" or "unmount" (maybe that should be dismount?) the secure drives you create. And, you can also decide whether the program should start automatically each time you start Windows. Create a secure logical disk, make it the size you want, give it a password, and you're ready to go. I found the interface to be easy-to-use and fairly intuitive. The key thing you need to remember is that while the "disks" you create appear as regular drives, they are really secure folders. And you can create as many of them as you want. The program is impressive because it performs a function and it performs it well!

SecureDisk, by Wekasoft, is a cool tool for creating secure "disks" on your Windows 2000, NT, or XP system. The virtual disks use an extremely secure encryption system so anything you place inside a virtual disk is secure. The encryption is extremely fast and depending on the speed of your computer, it may well seem undetectable. You can create as many "drives" as you want, make them the size you want, and have the program start along with Windows. So, if you'd like to have a way to have some safe drives on your computer, that only you can access, take a good look at SecureDisk. It may be just what you've been looking for! Check it out!

Well, that's about all we have time for this week. All of these are great programs and I hope you'll take the time to give them a try. I think you'll find they're well worth the download time. And remember, if you try a shareware product and find yourself using it, be sure to pay the author. In that way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. Oh, and you know that "minor blizzard" I mentioned at the beginning? Well, it ended up dumping over a foot of snow in my area. So, I'm off to shovel, but I'll be back next week with more great Picks to tell you about. Until then, have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading.
