Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Hey there, welcome back! I'm glad you stopped by. I've been working like crazy while recovering from some surgery on my jaw. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I get really busy, the temperature goes up to the mid-80's. Anyway, I've found some really good programs to tell you about, and I hope you'll enjoy hearing about them. So, if you're ready, pull up a chair, get something to drink, sit back, relax, and lets take a look!

  • Move Me
  • Version: 2.32.563
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Move Me NOW!

Move Me, by Spearit Software, is a clever program for moving all the important stuff from your old computer to your new computer. And by "important stuff" I mean things like your settings, your applications, and even your data files. A computer becomes a really personal thing. Each person has theirs setup a certain way, and it's a way that is comfortable to them. And really, isn't that the problem with getting a new computer? You have to work on the new one until you can get it to have that look and feel that your old one had. So that everything is in its place. Not a problem with Move Me in the picture. First thing you do is put a copy of the program on each computer -- the old one and the new one. From there the program figures out what needs to be moved, and tells you how much data its planning on moving. Very nicely done!

Move Me has a very intuitive interface, which makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. I like the fact that even a fairly new user would be able to use this program with no problems. The program gives you several ways to transfer the data between machines. For one, you can use a parallel cable - the kind most printers use. Or, you can use you LAN (Local Area Network). Other ways include utilizing media like ZIP disks, or even a file server. The program also has a "Control Center" that lets you have even more control over the transfer process. This feature would be of particular interest to those with more experience who want even more control. Another excellent feature is that the program will not disturb any software that was preinstalled on your new computer. Excellent.

Move Me, by Spearit Software, is a powerful tool for moving all your valuable data onto a new computer. I was quite impressed with the entire operation -- it was fast, smooth, and efficient. And it also has a very neat payment structure because you only pay when you use it. Think about it, how often do you get a new computer? So, when you do, get the program setup, simply pay $19.95, and with a few mouse clicks your new computer will have the settings, applications, and data of your old one. The computer will be new, but it will feel like "home." Next time you get a new computer, be sure to give Move Me a try. Very nicely done --- I recommend it!

Hx - In the early days of computers, we didn't have anything as fancy as Move Me. To begin with, hard disks weren't nearly as big, but then, neither were the files. My first hard disk was 10 megabytes -- that's right, ten times less space than a small ZIP disk. And, it cost me $800.00. I recently bought a 40 gigabyte hard drive for about $110.00. And back then, when you got a new computer, you either used the same hard disk, used a backup and restore program, or you reinstalled everything you had on the new computer. In 1986, a 20 megabyte hard drive was considered really big. And everyone wondered what could you put on a drive that big? Today, some games require 500 megabyte for installation. Yes, things have sure changed. -- Doc

  • Argentum MyFiles
  • Version: 2.30
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Argentum MyFiles NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Argentum MyFiles, click here!

Argentum MyFiles, by Argentum Corporation, is a nifty cataloging program that will help you keep track of all your files. And what I liked about it is that it can be used in so many different ways, and for different things. That makes it extremely flexible. Not only does it keep track of files, it can keep track of your CDs. And not only can it keep track of your CDs, but it can track what is on each CD. Wow! And it doesn't stop at CDs, that was just an example. You can use Argentum MyFiles to keep track of the contents of floppy disks, ZIP disks, entire hard drives, DVDs, and more. And the program is fast. Very impressive.

Argentum MyFiles can really be used to catalog and organize as many different kinds of things as you want. Seriously, the uses are just about unlimited. And I found the program to be very easy-to-use. The interface is quite intuitive and even newer users will have no trouble using it. And it's quick to find anything you're looking for. For example, organize all your music, and then whenever you need to, you can search through the program to find exactly what need. I found the search routines to be very powerful. Another nice feature is that the program keeps everything in a neat "tree" structure, so all of your items are easy to access. It also makes it easy to separate things into different areas along the tree. Extremely well done.

Argentum MyFiles, by Argentum Corporation, is a powerful tool for cataloging just about anything! Hard disks, floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, ZIP disks --- the program can handle a wide range of data. And it can also find all of the data you put in it, and that's really important. The program is flexible and very easy-to-use. So, if you're looking for a program to catalog something, take a really good look at Argentum MyFiles. This may just be exactly what you're looking for. Give it a try!

Blockworks, by Hypervisual, is a really cool "toy" that lets you construct just about anything, right on your computer screen. This neat program comes with a huge variety of parts, or segments, that you can make into anything you want. And while this is a great program for children, even adults could have a creative blast playing with it. Heck, with somewhere over 700 different parts, you can create a huge array of things fanciful or realistic. And the program is so very easy-to-use that even young children will catch on to it right away. And maybe even a bit faster than some 'computer-challenged' adults.

Blockworks makes it easy to pick a part ... say bricks, and then start laying them down. Ooops, went too far? No problem, you can erase parts with just a mouse click. Select other parts, rotate them, move an entire segment up, down, left, or right. The program makes is easy to create whatever you like. And, if you like, you can even have blocks that are animated, and "play" them. Very slick. And you can even change the background color. The program can even create some really different and innovative Windows "wallpaper" for your desktop.

Blockworks, by Hypervisual, is a nifty construction 'toy' that's just a lot of fun. It comes with a huge number of beautifully done "parts" that can be used to create all kinds of nifty things. Has support for sounds, animated blocks, different backgrounds, and lots more. Excellent for children of all ages, your creations can be saved as wallpaper, graphics, or even printed. So, if you're looking for something to inspire your childs imagination, or even your own, take a good look at Blockworks. I think you'll like it.
