Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Once again, I'd like to welcome you back! It's been another busy week and as always, I've been looking at lots of software. This week, I'm going to finish up the "roundup" I've been doing on the winners of the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Awards and the Shareware Industry Awards! Here again I've picked out some really cool programs to tell you about. So, let's take a look!

  • SureThing CD Labeler by MicroVision Development, Inc.
  • Version: 3.1
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download SureThing CD Labeler NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of SureThing CD Labeler, click here!

SureThing CD Labeler won the Shareware Industry Award in the "Best Application" category. It's billed as "The world's most popular CD labeling software!" and I'd say that's pretty accurate. It lets you do everything you want and need to do with CD labels. Create, edit, and print beautiful color labels for all of your CD's. Print labels for jewel cases, DVD's, and more. It makes the entire process so easy that absolutely anyone can do it! Even the "graphically challenged" like me. SureThing CD Labeler has truly extensive support for music playlists. And, it also goes out on the Internet to get music CD information for you. No typing in song titles. And the templates provided make designing labels really easy. The latest version of CD Labeler also features "SureThing Playlist Plus!" This really cool feature lets users of Windows Media Player print colorful labels right from their Media Player playlists! Very slick! In fact, using Playlist Plus, Media Player playlists can be edited, viewed, and sent right to CD Labeler for printing! If you use Media Player you have to see this.

I personally use it to label all of the CDs I create, whether they're data CDs or audio CDs. And CD labeler provides templates for both types. And, you can use CD Labeler with all of the most popular brands of CD labels and jewel case inserts, including Memorex, Avery, NEATO, CD Stomper, Stick-It, and more! The templates in SureThing CD Labeler are called "SmartDesigns" and they really take the guess-work out of creating labels. At the same time, you have complete control over what your labels look like. It has some really neat text effects that I like to use like circular text. Or you can pick angled text, horizontal text, and more. You can even put in shadows to give your label text a mellow look. Very nice.

SureThing CD Labeler, as you can see, is packed with features. And if all this weren't enough, CD Labeler comes with a huge selection of high-resolution backgrounds. I'm talking 3,000 plus. And how about 5,000 pieces of clipart that you can use to spice up your labels? Yep, they're in there. And if you like, use your own graphics ... CD Labeler is flexible and easy-to-use. With backgrounds, clipart, text effects, and more, SureThing CD Labeler is all you'll ever need to label all your CD's. So, if you do anything with CDs, check it out -- you'll love it!

  • Say The Time
  • Version: 5.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Say The Time NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Say The Time, click here!

Say The Time Provenio Software Corp, won the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Award in the "Best Vertical Market" category. This is a nifty little tool that will help keep you on schedule. And it's got some very neat features. First of all, it announces the time, the date, or even both, at the interval you desire -- like every hour. And, you can configure it to use either a male voice or a female voice. The program sits in the Windows taskbar and you have control over how it looks.

Rather than have a plain clock, you can change the colors that Say The Time uses. Change the font and even add textures to give it a truly customized look. Another really cool feature is that it can poll the atomic clock time servers and update your computers system clock! Nothing more accurate than those and you can do it manually or have the program check at a certain interval. Pretty slick, but Say The Time does even more -- reminders! You can set up any number of reminders to keep you on track. And reminders can do more than just display text. You can set them up to run a program or play a sound (WAV) file. When I'm really busy it's handy to have a sound that accompanies the reminder because it really gets my attention! And, you can schedule reminders that occur yearly, monthly, weekly, daily, and more.

Say The Time, by Provenio Software Corp, is a clever tool that takes the ordinary Windows clock a step further. Great for reminding you of birthdays, anniversaries, meetings, doctors appointments, and lots more. And, it's a great way to keep track of the time! In fact, it even has a "tooltip" that can show you the current phase of the moon! Be sure to take a look -- I think you'll like it!

  • askSam
  • Version:5.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download askSam NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of askSam, click here!

askSam, by askSam Systems, won the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Award in the "Best Application" category. And what an application it is! This powrerful "freeform" database can help you to easily keep track of all your information. And, it can utilize data from a wide variety of sources. When I say "freeform" I mean that unlike conventional databases, that use predefined "fields", askSam lets you enter information randomly. That's right ... you add data that doesn't conform to any specific form. Type it in, or you can also import a wide variety of formats like HTML, text files, Rich Text Format (RTF) files, and even documents from Word, Excel, and more. Heck, you can even put your old email messages into the program, and then search through them.

Speaking of searches, askSam has really powerful searching capabilities. And, the searches are fast and efficient. Putting data into a database is one thing, and finding that data when you need it is another, and this baby makes it easy. You can search in a variety of way including wildcard searches (*.*) when you aren't exactly sure what you're looking for, and Boolean searches where you can use operators like NOT, OR, & AND. If that weren't enough, you can also search for things by date, any word or phrase, and more. Very nicely done!

askSam, by askSam Systems, is a really powerful freeform database. It gives you great flexibility by letting you import a large range of file formats. At the same time you can also enter data manually. Even more importantly, askSam gives you a variety of ways of finding the information you've stored. So, if you're looking for a database that's both powerful and flexible, take a look! You won't be disappointed.

Well, that's it for this week. And, this is also the end of my "roundup" of the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Awards and Shareware Industry Awards winners. Congratulations to all of the winners --- I wish I had time to do reviews of all the winning products. Next week, I'll be back and I'll be reviewing other great programs I'd like to tell you about. So, I hope you'll be back too. And remember, if you try a software product, and find yourself using it, be sure to buy it! That way the "shareware" concept works for everyone! Have a great weekend!
