Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Reviewed by Dr. File Finder
Greetings and Welcome Back! I'm so glad you could stop by to take a look at this weeks Picks. I've got some interesting programs to tell you about. The pace around here has been frantic and I help get ready for the 2003 Shareware Industry Conference. Lots to do, but always time for looking at some good software. So, if you're ready, kick your shoes off, get something to drink, sit back, relax, and lets take a look!

  • Backup4all
  • Version: 1.5.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Backup4all NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Backup4all, click here!

Backup4all, by Softland, is a nifty backup utility that's also quite powerful. I found the program to have an intuitive interface and it was very easy-to-use. I think that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. One excellent feature is a "wizard" that walks you through the entire process. Give your backup a name, pick all the folders you want to backup, pick individual files, and select other options for your backup depending on your preferences. For packing up files, the program creates ZIP format files. Depending on your needs you can either go for maximum compression of fastest time -- your pick. And, if you want, use a password to further protect you data. Again, the choice is up to you.

Backup4all will let you schedule backups so they may be done automatically. One way to do it is just to set up all the backups you want and then just schedule them to run at different times. A great way to keep your important data safe and secure. Another great feature in the program is the ability to do an "incremental" backup. That means you can keep different versions of the same backup. And what does that mean? Well, for one, that you could have one file, but maintain different copies of it. In one copy you might say something one way, in another copy something different. A very handy feature to have. And the program will let you back up to CD-R, CD-RW, ZIP disk, even another hard drive, or a drive on your network. Slick!!

Backup4all, by Softland, is a powerful backup utility that's also easy-to-use. It offers a range of configurable options, and I like that. It also lets you backup to a wide range of media, including ZIP disks, CDs, and even network drives. The program is intuitive and the handy wizard makes backing up a snap for anyone. And, you can even schedule your backups, so you don't forget. So, if you're looking for a program to keep all your data backed up, take a good look at this! I think you'll like it! Nicely done!

  • Folder Express
  • Version: 1.21
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Folder Express NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Folder Express, click here!

Folder Express, by He Huang, is a neat little utility for helping you to move easily to the folders you use most. I mean, think about it. You have hundreds of folders on your computer, most of them not made by you. The overwhelming majority are made by Windows or by programs you install. So, why not make it easy on yourself when you're trying to get to things in Windows Explorer? Folder Express keeps track of the folders you've used recently. That makes it really easy to quickly go back to places you've just come from. Ahh, but that's not all. You can also "Add" the folders you use often to a list. This create an easily accessible menu. Ahh, but were still not done.

Folder Express makes it even easier still. If you want to can assign a "hot key" to each favorite folder. So, for example, say I assign CTRL + ALT + D to my C:\DNLD directory. When I want to pop up Windows Explorer all I have to do is press the hot keys. Very slick! IF you're not into hot keys, you can easily select what you want with your mouse from the menu. Ahhh, but we're still not done. Nope, because if you don't like the other options you can make the folders list a part of your "right-click" menu. Just click it and pow you're there! No wandering around through layer after layer of folders and perhaps still not ending up where you want to be. Another really cool feature is that you can also add Web URLS to your menus. So, your favorite Web sites are just a click away as well. Very neat indeed.

Folder Express, by He Huang, is a cleverly crafted piece of software that does a job and does it well. It makes it easy to get to all of the folders you use most often, and letting you avoid a lot of time-consuming wandering. Besides folders, you can also add links to Web pages and even documents. And if that weren't enough, you can assign hot keys to each folder, use icons of your own choosing, and more! So, if you'd like to have an easier way to maneuver around your hard disk, check out Folder Express. It can speed up the way you go from folder to folder. Check it out for yourself and see what I mean.

  • Softpit PC Search Engine
  • Version: 2.0.0.1
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP and CE
  • Get more info
  • Download Softpit PC Search Engine NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Softpit PC Search Engine, click here!

Softpit PC Search Engine, by Softpit AS, caught my eye and I thought I'd take the time to tell you about it. What makes it a bit different is that it's actually a "search engine" for your computer. Now, there are other programs that will search for text and other things on your computer, but none of them have the "look" that this program has. First, you have it index the kinds of files you'll want to be searching for. You can do all your drives, or just one -- up to you. In fact, that's one of the things I like about it. It lets you decide where to search and what to search for. That puts you in charge, and you know how much I like that! Impressive.

Softpit PC Search Engine is fast and also very easy-to-use. It can index a large number of files very quickly. Once you're done with the indexing, you're ready to roll. Type in what you'd like to search for and boom the program provides you with a list. If you want there's a handy "Edit" button by each search item, so you can open up what you found quickly. I was impressed with how quickly it works. You type in a word and when you press "Enter" you have results! And isn't that why you wanted to search to begin with? Another thing I like is that you configure the program to search the way you want it to. Over the years I've looked at a lot of "search" programs, but none of them have worked like this. Very slick indeed.

Softpit PC Search Engine, by Softpit AS, is what I'd consider to be a unique program. That's primarily because of the way it works. I truly like the fact that you tell it what to do, unlike many similar programs. It's fast, efficient, and gives you a quick way to edit the things it finds. It can support just about any type of file and that makes it really flexible, once again putting you in charge. So, if you'd like a novel way to search your computer for information, you owe it to yourself to take a good look at Softpit PC Search Engine. Try it ... I think you'll like it.

Once again, this brings us to an end of our time and space for this week. But, you can count on the fact that I'll be back again next week with more Picks, just for you. And, as soon as the annual Shareware Industry Conference is over, I'll be doing some reviews of the award winners. And not just from the Shareware Industry Awards, but also from the SIAF People's Choice Awards! So, lots to look forward to. Until next week, be safe, have fun, and happy downloading!
