Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Reviewed by Dr. File Finder
Welcome back! I'm so glad you could stop by to take a look at this weeks Picks. It's been in the 90's all week here in Colorado, so I've been busy working in my nice, cool office. Looking at lots of interesting software. And, as always, I've picked some really nice programs to tell you about. I hope you'll like them. So, if you're all set, take a load off your feet, relax, and lets take a look!

  • TuneUp Utilities
  • Version: 2003
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

  • Download TuneUp Utilities NOW!

TuneUp Utilities, by TuneUp Software GmbH, is perhaps one of the neatest programs I've seen all year. It offers a suite of high-powered tools that you won't want to be without. I've looked at a lot of similar programs, but this one really impressed me. The user interface is not only pleasing, but also intuitive. And, it offers a range of features that everyone can use to make their system faster and their life easier. The "DiskCleaner" module will eliminate all the junk files that slow your computer down. There's also a neat "MemOptimizer" feature that helps manage your system memory. It also has a RegistryCleaner that does an impressive job of really scrubbing all the useless junk from the registry. And a trimmed down Windows Registry will make your system run better.

TuneUp Utilities goes even further with its SystemControl module. This option lets you modify security settings, use of animation, the appearance of menus, and lots more. There's also an "Icon Engineer" that lets you change just about any Windows icon. Very slick. And if all this weren't enough, there's still more. How about a StartUp Manager to let you manage all the things that are started by Windows automatically. Also a System Information module that tells you everything you'd want to know about your computer -- from the brand of your CPU, your screen resolution, and who made your graphics card. You also have a way to undelete files as well as a way to "shred" them so they can't be recovered. And, last but not least, there's also a Process Manger, for dealing with running program and a nice System Optimizer that lets you do basic maintenance with just a click. Very cool.

TuneUp Utilities, by TuneUp Software GmbH, is really a powerful set of utilities. These utilities keep your computer in top shape, let you alter settings, modify icons, and even improve your connection to the Internet. You can clean the system Registry, remove unwanted files, check information on your computer, and plenty more. The program is perfect for both new and experienced users, and quite impressive. So, if you're looking for an all-around tool to take care of things on your computer, you have to take a look at this. One of the best programs I've seen in a long time. Try it!

  • The Bat!
  • Version: 1.61
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download The Bat! NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of The Bat!, click here!

The Bat!, by RITLABS, is an excellent email client and that's also loaded with features. To begin with, it has support for both POP3 and IMAP4 email. It handles multiple accounts with ease. You may say that quite a few email clients have that feature so lets look at what The Bat! has that's unique. Like a mail "ticker" that shows you the headers of your incoming mail just like a stock ticker. Very slick! And, if you're concerned about security, the program has support for PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), to keep your email secure. The program has all the power an experienced user might want, while having the ease-of-use that a novice user would want.

Another feature I really like is "spell-as-you-go" which handles spelling errors as they occur. It has multi-lingual support, message filtering, and a built-in HTML viewer. It's also very configurable and has a powerful macro/scripting language. This language can be used to create "Quick Templates" that help you to generate emails quickly. Particularly handy for those who frequently answer the same questions over and over. The message filtering is very powerful and about the best I've ever tested. You can configure the user interface, import messages from major email programs, and organize your email in Explorer-style folders. It also has message templates that are fully customizable, to give your email some flair. And, it gives you flexibility because each folder can have its own templates. Very cool!

The Bat!, by RITLABS, is a powerful email client that's also easy-to-use. While it appeals to someone like me because of it's many advanced features, it's not too complicated for newer users. I've tried basically every email program that's available online, and so far, I like The Bat! the best! Take a look at it for yourself and see what you think.

  • Servers Alive

  • Download Servers Alive NOW!

Servers Alive, by bvba Woodstone, is a powerful network monitor that's easy-to-use! It's simply packed with great features that you just have to check out for yourself. For starters it can monitor any winsock service, but it can do so much more. It can, for example, determine the amount of disk space that's left on a drive, or just make sure that a everything is running the way it's supposed to. The program is now available in two versions. The classic Standard version that supports 1,000 entries, and the new Enterprise version that supports 5,000! Wow. And, if you have a problem on your server you'll be amazed at the number of ways you can be notified by this powerful program. So, you never have to worry. If there's a problem Servers Alive detects it, and let you know. Cool!

Servers Alive monitors your network and when there's trouble, it can let you know in a variety of ways. It can send an email, play a sound, or even page you on your pager. It can reboot a Windows server or even create a Web page! It has the power to continually monitor a huge number of hosts or services at one time -- 1,000 with the Standard edition and 5,000 with the Enterprise edition. What can it monitor? Well, I couldn't possibly list them all but just a few include thing like DNS, SMTP, POP3, Oracle databases, FTP, SQL servers, UDP services, and lots, lots more. And, the icing on the cake is that Servers Alive was the first product to support IPv6 enabled DNS checks as well as WAP pages that can be viewed on a wireless device. To translate, that meant you could be advised of a problem on your network with an SMS text message. Slick!

Servers Alive, by bvba Woodstone, monitors critical systems and can keep you aware of exactly how things are going on your network. And when there's a problem, it can notify you in an number of ways. It's there, monitoring your network, even when you can't be. I found the program extremely easy to setup and run. So, if you've been looking for a program to really keep a close eye on your network, this is it! It's a network administrators dream. Give it a try -- I think you'll be impressed.

Where does the time go? Once again, we've reached the end for another week. I really do hope you've enjoyed these Picks, and take the time to try them out for yourself. All of them are truly excellent and well worth the download time. I'm off for now, but I'll be back next week with more great software to tell you about. Until them, I hope you have a good week, a great weekend, and a happy, festive, and safe 4th of July! Happy downloading!
