Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Reviewed by Dr. File Finder
Greetings and Salutations! I'm so glad you've stopped by to take a look at this weeks Picks! It's been very hot here in Colorado so I've been spending a lot of time in my nice, cool office and getting a lot of work done. And, as always, I've been looking at a lot of really interesting software. I've picked some good ones to tell you about and I hope you'll enjoy reading about them. So, if you're all set, just sit back, relax, and lets take a look.

  • EzVoice
  • Version: 2.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download EzVoice NOW!

EzVoice, by Internet Soft Solutions, is a nifty program that acts both as your answering machine and your voice mail. I found the program to be very intuitive and easy-to-use. And that would make it perfect for users with all levels of computer experience. The program gives you ten (10) voice mail boxes that you can configure to suit your needs. Note that you have to have a modem that support "voice" in order to use the program. And, the program can even tell you if your modem will work. Very slick. Another cool feature is the address book. You can enter people in there and that allows you to leave each person a unique message. And, the program will also let you screen calls.

EzVoice also offers support for Caller ID, but remember that you have to have Caller ID through your local phone company. If that's the case, the program can tell you who is calling. Callers can leave you messages, and these can be saved for later reference. In addition, you can attach notes to both your voice messages and entries in your address book. The program has some powerful search capabilities so you can find exactly what you're looking for -- whether it's a person in your address book or a message that you saved. And, if all this weren't enough, the program will even let you get your phone messages from a remote location. Very cool.

EzVoice by Internet Soft Solutions, is an interesting tool for dealing with phone messages. It gives you the ability to have multiple voice mailboxes. With support for remote retrieval, Caller ID, and even unique messages for different callers, it's a real powerhouse. The interface is extremely easy-to-use and I had it up in running in less that 5 minutes. You can't beat that! And if you're currently using a regular answering machine it'll save some space on your desk. So, if you're looking for a software solution for handling phone messages, this may be just what you're looking for. Give it a try!

  • InControl
  • Version: 1.1
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download InControl NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of InControl, click here!

InControl, by Virtuoza, is a handy utility for controlling what programs start when Windows starts. Whether many of you realize it or not, some of the programs you install set themselves up so they are loaded each time Windows starts. Some of these can be found in the "StartUp" folder which can be found by clicking Start - Programs and looking for the folder. You can even add things to this folder if you want them to start when Windows does. The problem arises when you have too many things loading and not enough RAM. Many people don't even know what things are loaded at startup. And some things load because of an entry in the Windows Registry not an entry in your StartUp folder. And that's where InControl comes in.

InControl gives you the power to easily determine what programs are loaded when you start Windows. Many people will be shocked to see just how many things are loaded and each one of those program uses up memory, or RAM. The program lets you totally remove applications that you don't want. That does two things -- it makes your computer start faster and it frees up memory. Some programs are very insistent and they'll keep loading even if you remove them from the StartUp group. That's okay because InControl has a feature called the "Black List" and you can add programs to it that you absolutely do not want starting at startup. Pretty slick. The program also lets you eliminate any old entries.

InControl, by Virtuoza, is a handy program for identifying what programs load with Windows and having some control over that entire process. See what's loading, and take the action that suits you. Stop certain programs from loading by adding them to a 'black list.' And, you can even remove any old or unwanted entries. Note, that some programs, like anti-virus programs, have to load with Windows in order to protect your computer. So, use the program wisely. And if you'd like to have some control over what's loading on your computer when you turn it on, give this program a try!

Hx - In the early days of the personal computer (PC), the user always knew what was loaded because they actively decided what was loaded. When you installed a program, it sat there until you ran it. If you had a menu program that you wanted to have start when your computer did, you had to put an entry in a "batch" file that would make the program load. In the world of Windows, that's no longer true. You start the installation of a program, but overall you have very little control over what happens. If a program puts an entry in the Registry to make itself start, you may not know it. And it may not be something that you need or want running. If you have 10 programs that do that, you get low on memory. There was an anonymous saying back in the early 80's that said "You can never have too much RAM or too much disk space!" And I've found that this is true whether it's 1983 or 2003. So, check the things that start with your computer. You may be wasting your precious memory. -- -- Doc

  • As-U-Type
  • Version: 2.2
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

  • Download As-U-Type NOW!

As-U-Type, by Fanix Software, is a neat utility that spell checks everything you type on your computer in real time. So, if you type something wrong, it catches it, and right now! But it's even more than just another spell checker. In using the software for a period of time, I found that it seems to adapt to my "style" of writing. And, it also corrects many spelling mistakes automatically. That can be a real time-saver because it means that when you're done typing something, you're totally done! You don't have to go back and check the spelling. Another neat feature is that you can go in and add things that may be peculiar to you. For example, I sometimes use "Ahh", such as "Ahh, I understand." Well, the program didn't like that so I went in and added it. Very slick.

As-U-Type is extremely easy-to-use and perfect for both new and experienced users. And I believe the programs helps to make you more productive. And, unlike spelling programs that are part of a particular program, this works in every program under Windows. And I do mean every program including your email, instant messenger, Web browser, and lots more. And it'll make you look like the winner of the spelling bee! The program also lets you copy and paste text segments through the use of keyboard shortcuts. And that also saves you time, and effort. I'm actually using it as I type this review and by now I've gotten very used to it being there. Heck, it not only types you're regular spelling errors, but it'll even catch something that's accidental .. Like a stray key press. Very slick!

As-U-Type, by Fanix Software, is an interesting program that will make everything you type better. It works all the time no matter what program you're using. It learns the mistakes you make most, and adapts. It will correct many mistakes automatically. And with others, it will make a sound and underline the error in red. You can insert pieces of text with shortcuts, add to the dictionary, add little phrases peculiar to yourself, and more! So, if you're like many people and have trouble with spelling, this is a program you want to have! It may well be a program you need to have. Get rid of the errors in everything you write and give this program a good, long look! You're going to like it!

Once again, that's all we have time for this week. I really hope you enjoyed reading about these products. All of them are very good and well worth the download time. And remember, if you try a "shareware" product and find yourself using it, be sure to pay for it. In this way, the shareware marketing model works for all of us. I'm off to go look at some more software, but I'll be back next week with some more Picks, just for you. I hope you'll be back to check them out. Until then, have yourself a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading!
