Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Welcome Back!! I'm so glad you could stop by to check out my Picks for this week. We've reached the middle of August and soon it will be "back to school" time for lots of children. And, the end of "vacation time" for many adults. I hope you've been enjoying your summer. It's been hot here and I've been staying in my nice, cool office. And, as usual, I've been looking at a lot of software and I've found some really interesting ones to tell you about. So, if you're all set, just kick back, get yourself something to drink, and lets take a look!

  • MagicTweak
  • Version: 2.60
  • System Requirements: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download MagicTweak NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of MagicTweak, click here!

MagicTweak, by Efreesky Software, is a powerful program that lets you modify all kinds of hidden settings under Windows. The user interface is very easy-to-use and also very intuitive. And that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. The program lets you "tweak" lots of different things and do it safely. For one, you can take control of the programs that load when Windows starts. And you might be surprised by what's loading and using up your memory. Another neat feature is that you can change a lot of the default icons used by Windows. Really customize the look of your desktop. Yet another feature I really liked was the ability to look at, and modify, the location and contents of system folders. For example, I was getting really irritated with Windows always making a "My Pictures" folder, so I used MagicTweak to remove it! Very slick.

MagicTweak lets you modify a huge number of setting in Internet Explorer, so it works the way you want it to work. You can also change some of Internet Explorers default settings. Or, go in and hide some of the thing that appear in the Windows "Control Panel" -- great for hiding things you never use. Another really excellent feature is the ability to edit security settings. For example, you can disable the default Registry Editor, or disable the MS-DOS prompt. The program is also excellent for uninstalling software! Really does a nice job. The program can do so many things that I could go on and on. Clear all of your history information, hide items on your desktop, remove junk files, restrict specific applications from running, and lots more.

MagicTweak, by Efreesky Software, is extremely well done. I've looked at a number of similar program and this is one of the best I've seen. It's jam packed with features and functions. And it allows you to fiddle with things that you normally can't fiddle with -- and I like that. And if you change a setting and find you don't like the effect, you can always go change it back. So, if you'd like to be able to go in an alter things, from Internet Explorer settings to which programs start with Windows, this might be just what you're looking for. Give it a try, I recommend it!

  • Info Select for Palm
  • Version: 2.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Info Select for Palm NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Info Select for Palm, click here!

Info Select for Palm 2, by Micro Logic, Inc., is another program that that's been around for years. And over the years it's also evolved into quite a powerful PIM or personal information manager. Unlike most other PIMs, Info Select utilizes an outline structure. That means you can "collapse" the things you don't need while being able to "expand" others. The program features a very powerful search feature so you can find all the things you place in it. You can use it to keep track of all your daily tasks. It can also store a wealth of "freeform" information. The desktop version has been around for years, but now there's this nifty version for the Palm OS. Very cool.

Info Select for Palm 2 can be run in coordination with the desktop version, or you can elect to just run it by itself on your Palm organizer. Personally, I think running both of them is a great idea. That way you can take the things you do on your desktop computer with you when you go. The Palm version of Info Select has all of the most important features of the desktop version. It lets you synchronize your datebook and your address book between your desktop and your Palm. You can use it to organize all of your notes, items on your "ToDo" list, and more. And it's loaded with neat features like date and time stamping, import, and lots more.

Info Select for Palm 2, by Micro Logic, Inc., is a powerful, yet easy-to-use, personal information manager for your Palm device. It's a truly full-featured personal information manager. The Palm version can be used standalone or in conjunction with the desktop version. Carry all of your important information with you -- addresses, ToDo lists, notes, ideas, and more. So, if you use the desktop version and have a Palm device, you're going to want to check this out. And, if you're just a Palm user who's looking for a nice PIM, then this may be what you're looking for. Very nicely done!

  • FolderClone
  • Version: 2.03
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download FolderClone NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of FolderClone, click here!

FolderClone, by Salty Brine Software, provides a great way to keep backups of your programs and synchronize files on other machines or on a variety of media. In the past I've reviewed its sister product, FolderMatch which is also excellent. FolderClone, however, provides a somewhat different function and I want to tell you about it. As the name implies, it creates a "clone" of a "source" folder or file in a different location. You can opt to include or exclude sub folders. You can synchronize a program between two computers, or make an exact copy of a set of files on a ZIP disk, CD, DVD, and the like. Very cool. And it's great for use at home or in your business.

FolderClone has a very intuitive interface and the program is extremely easy-to-use. I think that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. Once you get it set up, the program will run in the background and won't bother you in the least. I use it to keep backup copies of programs on my computer on other computers in my network. So, for example, I want a backup of my e-mail program kept on another computer. I set up FolderClone to make an exact copy on the other computer every hour. That way, should my computer suffer a hard drive failure, I'd have all my e-mail on another machine. I do the same thing with other programs, certain folders in the My Documents folder and so on. You can also use it to keep files synchronized. And, you don't have to just go between computers, you can also just backup to things like your CD. Excellent!

FolderClone, by Salty Brine Software, is an extremely useful program that's very easy-to-use. You can set it up to work on its own at time intervals you determine -- whether it's every few hours or every few minutes. You can also elect to synchronize manually. The program is perfect for keeping exact copies of your most used programs in multiple locations. Better safe than sorry. Perfect for home or business. So, if you're looking for a fast and easy way to backup program and files, or keep copies of programs in other places, give FolderClone a try. I give it my highest recommendation!

Well, I guess that brings us to a close for this week. I always wish I had more time so I could tell you about even more great software. Take the time to give these Picks a try. I think you'll like them as much as I do. And remember, if you try a "shareware" program and find yourself using it, be sure to buy it! In that way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about and I hope you'll join me. Until then, have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading!
