Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Welcome back! I'm glad you could come by to take a look at my Picks for this week. Fall is starting to settle in around here and many youngsters are back in school. Lots of things to do around the house getting ready for Winter. I've also been keeping busy looking at lots of interesting software and I've picked some of the best to tell you about. So, if you're all set, sit back, relax, and lets take a look.

  • SureThing CD Labeler
  • Version: 4.0.0.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download SureThing CD Labeler NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of SureThing CD Labeler , click here!

SureThing CD Labeler, by MicroVision Development, is a powerful program for doing anything you want or need to do with CD labels. I burn a lot of CDs. I send out programs to people, give them away when I speak at user group meetings, send them out to press contacts, and so on. And this is what I use. You can create, edit, and print beautiful color labels for all of your CD's. Print labels for jewel cases, DVD's, and more. It makes the entire process so easy that absolutely anyone can do it! Even the "graphically challenged" like me. SureThing CD Labeler has truly extensive support for music playlists. The latest version of SureThing CD Labeler also features "SureThing Playlist Plus!" This really cool feature lets users of Windows Media Player and/or MusicMatch Jukebox print colorful labels right from their compilation CDs without re-typing all of the song titles. It comes with a huge number of backgrounds and clipart.

SureThing CD Labeler comes with even more backgrounds and clipart in this most recent version. And, it also has some neat, new features like an online design gallery, spoke designs, spiral designs, circular text, and more. It's billed as "The world's most popular CD labeling software!" and I'd say that's pretty accurate. I personally use it to label all of the CDs I create, whether they're data CDs or audio CDs. And CD Labeler provides templates for both types. And, you can use CD Labeler with all of the most popular brands of CD labels and jewel case inserts, including Memorex, Avery, NEATO, CD Stomper, Stick-It, and more! The templates in SureThing CD Labeler are called "SmartDesigns" and they really take the guess-work out of creating labels. At the same time, you have complete control over what your labels look like. And I like that!

SureThing CD Labeler, by MicroVision Development, is just loaded to the brim with features. The interface is intuitive and so easy to use. It has clip art, backgrounds, text effects, and you can even use your own pictures and graphics. You can save your labels, modify them, and use them again. For CDs, DVDs, jewel cases, and more this is the program you need if you want a label. This is more than just a "Pick", it's one of my Dr. File Finder Favorites! so give it a try -- you won't be disappointed! I give it my highest recommendation!

  • WebGate
  • Version: 3.6
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000
  • Get more info
  • Download WebGate NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of WebGate, click here!

WebGate, by NotePage, Inc., is a powerful way to fully utilize wireless devices like mobile phones and pagers. And what makes it really cool is that you can contact people using email or your Web browser. This is a great tool for businesses because it gives you the power to rapidly send out messages and important bulletins to large numbers of people. Get the latest "news flash" out to employees that aren't in the office without ever leaving your computer. The program is very fast and it's also easy-to-use. Contact employees from the Web either using a separate Web page for each individual, or you can select the person you want to contact from a drop-down list. Very slick and very easy!

WebGate has a very cool interface for dealing with email too. For one, you can have it grab all of the email that comes to your email account. Or, if you want, have it collect the email from multiple accounts. The program is compatible with just about every kind of server including UNIX and MS Exchange. And, at the same time, it can deal with most email clients, including Eudora and Microsoft Outlook. WebGate really gives you a lot of flexibility. It can, for example, support up to 16 modems and that gives you real power for your messaging. It also has intelligent message queuing and that's important. Nicely done!

WebGate, by NotePage, Inc. Is a powerful program that provides you with all the features you need. It allows for remote administration, maintains detailed logs, and has support for a wide range of message delivery options. This is one of the best ways to fully utilize todays technology by combining the power of your computer with the mobility of your mobile devices. People "in the field" can be just as informed as people in the office. This is another fine product from the people at NotePage. So, if you're in business to succeed, take a good look at WebGate. It's truly an all-around communication solution! I recommend it!

Hx - In the early days of computers, back when everyone used DOS, there were only so many ways you could use your computer for communication. Obviously there were modems, but the early modems were very slow. 300 baud which worked out to about 26 characters a second. Yeah, that sounds fast but now many people can get over one million characters in a second. Besides dialing into bulletin boards (there was no Internet then) some programs used the modem for dialing phones. Not exactly a communications revolution. Today, programs like WebGate make it possible to use the computer in a variety of ways to really communicate with employees, friends, and relatives. My have things changed. -- -- Doc

  • Animated Spelling
  • Version: 1.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Animated Spelling NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Animated Spelling, click here!

Animated Spelling, by FLIX Productions, is a neat program for helping children learn to spell. In everyday life, many people have problems with spelling. So, why not get an early start on the problem? The program works in two ways. One way is for the child to hear the word being spoken by the program, and then typing out the correct spelling. They get two tries to get the word correct. If they fail to get it correct, the program tells them how to spell it - both on the screen and with sound. When they get a word correct, it reveals a part of a picture -- you can see this in my screen capture. And, when they get ten words right, the picture becomes animated.

Animated Spelling also provides another way for children to learn spelling. This method is a word match, where the program "says" a word and then they have three words to pick from on the screen. Using both methods really helps to give a total spelling program to the child. The child is also able to pick from two different lists of words, one list that's easier and one that has words that are more complex. As in all FLIX products, the animations, that are displayed as "treats" for doing well, are excellent. They're also fun to watch.

Animated Spelling, by FLIX Productions, is a neat program for helping children to learn to spell. It gives them two different ways to practice and it goes back to give them another chance at words they've missed. Revealing the pictures as they spell words correctly, and then animating the picture after they get 10 right, gives the child a feeling of accomplishment. Too many people have a problem with spelling. So, if you have children, take a good look at Animated Spelling - it's free to try. And, the "Animated Spelling CD" has over 700 words, complete with sound and nearly 70 animations! Another great educational program from the folks at FLIX Productions. Try it!

Alas, that brings me to the end of my Picks for this week. I hope that you enjoyed reading about these programs as much as I enjoyed writing about them. All of them are excellent and well worth the download time. So, take the time to try them out -- you won't be sorry. And don't forget, if you try a "shareware" program and find yourself using it, be sure to pay for it. That way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading.
