Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Greetings! and welcome to another Dr. File Finder's Picks Roundup! Because I've received good feedback, I'll be doing "roundups" of programs every now and then. I did one a few weeks ago on SPAM-related software. This week, I want to do a roundup on some excellent backup programs. A friend of mine had a hard disk crash last week and sadly he didn't have current backups. And when you don't, that means you lose some things forever. Pictures, documents, and many things that may be irreplaceable. So, the best thing you can do for yourself is to keep your computer backed up. And, to help you out, here are reviews of three really excellent backup programs. Give them a try and maybe you'll find one of them suits you. Remember, when you don't backup, you have everything to lose. So, if you're ready, lets take a look!

  • Backup Plus
  • Version: 7.1.2
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Backup Plus NOW!

Backup Plus, by AVANTRIX Inc., is a high-powered backup and restore program that's also easy-to-use. And backing up your computer is really important. If you don't, you're asking for disaster. And Backup Plus lets you back up everything, from single files to complete drives. You decide what to back up, and when, by creating what are called "backup sets." A backup set is really just a listing of the files, folders, and so on that you want to backup. You can have multiple backup sets and there's even a "wizard" to help you! And there are a number of configurable options, including how backups are named, adding password protection, and more!

With Backup Plus, you can backup your data to a variety of media including ZIP and JAZ disks, floppy disks, CD-R, and CD-RW's. That gives you lots of flexibility depending on what you have and on what you have to backup. One of my favorite features, however, is the ability to do timed or scheduled backups. This adds a real level of convenience. Lets say you're backing up to a CD-R disc. You can put a new disc in your drive and have it ready. Have Backup Plus set to backup at say 10:00 p.m. At that time the program will come alive and backup the backup sets you've selected. Just remember to keep in mind how much space is available for backup to when you're picking your backup sets.

Backup Plus, by AVANTRIX Inc., is a great tool for backing up, and restoring, all of the important data on your computer. Data that it might be impossible to replace otherwise. The ability to use a variety of media and do timed backups make it extremely flexible. And, it's so intuitive that it's perfect for both new and advanced users. So, if you aren't backing up your important files, you should be. And if you're going to backup, take a good look at Backup Plus! It's what I use and I think it's the best I've seen!

  • Handy Backup
  • Version: 4.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Handy Backup NOW!

Handy Backup, by Novosoft, Inc., is a powerful program for backing up your data. At the same time, I found it extremely easy-to-use and intuitive. It also gives you a variety of options as to where you'll backup your data. You can, for example, select from backing up to another drive on your LAN (local area network), to an FTP site, or to CD-R or CD-RW discs. And unlike most other backup programs I've looked at, this one has support for special "plug-ins". Very slick. The plug-ins make it easier to backup things like the Windows Registry, ICQ, and Microsoft Outlook. It keeps a log of everything you do, lets you drag and drop from Windows Explorer, and lots more!

Handy Backup comes with ZIP compression that's integrated right into the program. At the same time it also has support for 128-bit encryption, so your stored data is always safe. One feature that I really liked was the fact that the program supports "spanning" of discs. That means that if your data exceeds the size of your first CD, your backup doesn't just stop. Instead, the program prompts you to give it another CD. With this feature, you can have huge backups and have them span multiple CDs. Very slick! Handy Backup also has a nifty scheduler which I found to be extremely flexible. It also gives you an option to do your backups when you log off your computer or when you log on. A nice option to have. The program also puts an icon in your system tray, shows you its progress, and works nicely in the background.

Handy Backup, by Novosoft, Inc., is a nicely engineered piece of software. Its designed to backup all of your important data and it does that job very well. The program has a number of useful and also interesting features, like the use of plug-ins. I found Handy Backup to be very easy-to-use and feel that even novice users would do well with it. It can backup to drives on your network, your FTP site, as well as to CDs. And, it can span CDs so your backups aren't limited. So, if you've been looking for a program for backing up your data, give Handy Backup a try! I think you'll like it -- I did!

  • WinBackup
  • Version:
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download WinBackup NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of WinBackup, click here!

WinBackup, by LIUtilities, Inc., is a backup utility that's extremely well-done! The interface is intuitive and extremely easy-to-use and that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. And while it's easy-to-use, it's still loaded with impressive features. The program allows you to make regular backups of all your most important files. And I can't stress enough just how important it is to keep your data backed up. WinBackup will let you schedule automatic backups so they can run while you're not using your computer. All you have to do is remember to put a fresh CD or DVD in the drive -- WinBackup can use both! And, if you're around when you run your backups you'll be pleased to know that WinBackup can "span" multiple disks. That means you can backup your entire hard disk if you want!

WinBackup utilizes file compression to make each file smaller. That means you can get more on each disc. At the same time it keeps your data secure, allowing you to encrypt it with either 128 or 256-bit encryption. And, if that weren't enough, the program even lets you password protect your backups. Want to know how your last scheduled backup went? No problem because the program keeps a complete log of its activities. Very slick! Another excellent feature is that WinBackup will do an estimate and calculate the approximate size of your backups that use compression. The program works quickly and efficiently and also works very well in the background. In several of my tests I had it backing up while I worked and it did an impressive job.

WinBackup, by LIUtilities, Inc., is a backup utility thats both powerful and secure. You can password protect against unauthorized access and encrypt your data. Backups can be scheduled for different times and the program runs very well in the background. It backups up to CD or DVD, utilizes compression to save space, and keeps detailed logs of what it does. And yet, with all the things it provides, the program is still very intuitive and easy-to-use! I've evaluated a number of backup utilities, and for my money WinBackup is one of the best I've tried. So, if you've been meaning to backup all of your valuable data, don't waste another minute. Give WinBackup a try -- I think you'll be impressed!

Once again, that brings us to a close for this week. I truly hope you enjoyed this Dr. File Finder's Picks Roundup on backup software. I don't drive my car without fastening my seatbelt, I don't drive a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, and I don't work on computers without having a good backup! And you shouldn't either! Take the time to give these programs a try. I'll be back next week with more great Picks to tell you about. Until then, I hope you have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading!
