Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Greetings and Welcome! I'm glad you could take the time to stop by to take a look at my Picks for this week. Fall seems to be in full swing here in Colorado, but it's not as easy to tell as it was when we lived in Michigan. Lots of sun and lots of clear, crisp days. Anyway, as always, I've been looking at a lot of software and I've found some excellent programs to tell you about. So, if you're all set, sit back, relax, prop up your feet, and lets take a look!

  • Quality Time
  • Version: 3.52
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

  • Download Quality Time NOW!

Quality Time, by Wieser Software Ltd., is a nifty program for limiting the amount of time that users can be on your computer. While I make my living on the computer, I personally think that many young people spend way too much time on the computer. Many of my friends who have teenage children comment to me how hard it is to limit the amount of time their children are online, for example. So, when I found this neat program to limit that time, I just had to look at it. The program is very easy-to-use and has an intuitive interface. I think that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. I found it very east to setup, unlike some other programs I've looked at. And the program gives you a great deal of flexibility and I like that!

Quality Time is cool because it lets you go in as the "administrator" and set up different users. With each user you can define what hours of the day that user can be on the computer and how many hours during that time span. So, for example, say you'll allow your teenage daughter "Jane" to be on the computer 2 hours a day, for doing homework, etc. You can set up Quality Time so she's allowed to use the computer from say 4:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. and only 2 hours during that time period. This way you've given her some flexibility and yet you can still maintain the time limit. All the user has to do is log in, and their time is tracked. They even get a neat reminder when their time is running out. And the program makes it impossible to get around it. If a user changes the time on the computer, the program detects it and locks down the computer. Pretty slick. And, you can't reboot and get around it either!

Quality Time, by Wieser Software Ltd., is a nicely done program that lets you define how much time each person in your household can be on the computer. And they can only be on at your defined times. If you have a big family you'll be glad to know that the program supports up to 10 users. You can also define time blocks by Weekday Morning, Weekday Afternoon, and also Weekend. And, last but not least, the program lets you create a report that shows the usage for each user for the past week. Slick. So, if you'd like to limit the amount of time that your children spend on the computer, this may well be your solution. Give it a try - I recommend it!

  • ICUII
  • Version:
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download ICUII NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of ICUII, click here!

ICUII, by Cybration, Inc., Is an award-winning program for doing video, voice, or even text chats. ICUII has the power and flexibility to let you chat in a variety of ways depending on the hardware you have. If you don't have a video camera, no problem! One of the things I really like about ICUII is it's flexibility. It gives you lots and lots of choices, and I like that in any program. That's the way it should be and with ICUII, it is! Perhaps that's why it's won the SIAF People's Choice Awards multiple times as well as the Shareware Industry Award for "Best Internet Communication Program."

ICUII will let you talk with sound using a microphone. Don't have a microphone? Again, no big deal because ICUII will let you use text. ICUII uses its own server, so you can connect to friends no matter where they are in the world. The program has an intuitive user interface and is very easy-to-use! That makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. It also supports a wide range of hardware, so it would be hard for you to buy a Web Cam that it wouldn't support. Again, the program has that great flexibility that I like to see in software. And you can even purchase hardware right on the ICUII Web site where they have a nice selection of cameras, microphones, headsets, and more. And when it comes to keeping in touch, the program lets you do email, have group discussions, make your own private meeting areas, and lots more.

ICUII, by Cybration, Inc., is perfect for communicating with friends and relatives around the world. You can set it up and start using it in minutes, it's just that easy. This latest version is loaded with new and improved features including a new skinning tool, an improved user directory, roll-up buttons, custom remote and local fonts, and much, much more. So, if you have the need for visual conferencing, with sound, you owe it to yourself to check it out! I recommend it!

Hx - In the early days of computers we didn't have any fancy ways to communicate. I was on the first bulletin board system, and while it seemed cool at the time, it was really very primitive. You could have a "chat" with the sysop (system operator) on a bulletin board, but that was also very primitive. No split screens, no color, no sounds, so fancy text, and certainly no live pictures. But, at the time, it was good enough to communicate and besides, it was all there was. Today computer users can communicate with impressive programs like ICUII and have pictures and voice and lots more. My, how things have changed. -- Doc

  • SurfSaver Pro
  • Version: 2.3
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download SurfSaver Pro NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of SurfSaver Pro, click here!

SurfSaver Pro, by askSam Systems, is a nifty add-on for your Web browser! And if you surf the 'net as much as I do, I think you'll like this program. What's it do? Well, it lets you save Web pages, on-the-fly, to your hard disk. Speaking for myself, I'm busy and often don't have time to read everything I see on the Internet. At least not right at the moment I see it. And that's where SurfSaver comes in. For example, you're on a news page, but you don't have time to read it. Simply have SurfSaver Pro save it, and then you can read it later. And SurfSaver Pro saves everything -- all the graphics and all the links. It can be weeks from now and you can still have access to a news story you saved. Very slick! The program lets you archive anything you want off the Internet -- news, game tips, recipes, sale items. You name it!

SurfSaver Pro, as I said earlier, is an add-on for your Web browser. It becomes a part of your browser toolbar, so it's always right at hand. And what it's really doing is creating a database of Web pages right on your computer. And a searchable database at that! And the search feature is extremely powerful. You can search for text, like "News". Or, you can search on a range of dates, like November 1, 2002 through November 22, 2002. You can also use Boolean operators like AND, OR, and NOT. Search by the Web URL (Universal Resource Locator), or a list of keywords. SurfSaver makes it easy to find exactly what you want. And besides being great for everyday things, SurfSaver is wonderful for anyone who's doing research. Think about it. Go out, find what you're looking for, and save it all to your hard disk. It's all there, waiting for you to read, to print, to search, and more! Nothing could be easier.

SurfSaver Pro, by askSam Systems, is a powerful tool the becomes a part of your Web browser. It lets you store the contents of Web pages right on your computer. At the same time, it has the power of a database and it lets you search, and find, exactly what you're looking for. The power of the search function is impressive. I'd say that SurfSaver Pro is a handy tool for anyone and it's a must-have tool for anyone who's doing research! I've looked at a lot of "browser add-ons", but this is one that has become a permanent part of my browsers. If you're busy, or doing research of any kind, take a good look at SurfSaver Pro! I give it my highest recommendation!

Well, once again, that's all we have time for. I hope you enjoyed reading about my Picks for this week. All of them are excellent programs and well worth the download time. Give them a try and I think you'll like them as much as I did. And remember, if you try a "shareware" program, and find yourself using it, be sure to pay for it. In this way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I'm off to look at more great software, but I'll be back next week with more Picks just for you. Until then, have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading.
