Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Greetings and Welcome! In going over my reader email this week I found I had a number of requests and questions about databases. Databases can be powerful tools for keeping track of all kinds of information. You can use databases to store addresses and phone numbers, or to keep track of coins, stamps, and lots, lots more. So, because you asked, I'm doing a Dr. File Finder Database Roundup! All of these products are excellent so I hope you'll take a look at each of them. Now, if you're ready, sit back, relax, and lets take a look!

  • Readerware
  • Version: 2.85
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Readerware NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Readerware, click here!

Readerware, by Readerware Corporation, is a truly impressive program for cataloging all of your music, books, and videos. Over the years I've looked at lots of "catalog" programs and this one is really first-rate! And it's so easy-to-use that I think it's perfect for anyone -- new or experienced user. What makes it so cool, and so efficient, is that you can enter information in so many ways. Have a lot of books? Just enter the ISBN number and the program finds that book on the Web. Slick. Even slicker is the fact that it provides all the information -- title, author, description, keywords, and lots more. No typing it in and that's a real time saver.

Readerware can work with you directly online to catalog books. When I tested it I was in my office. Take a look at the screen shot. Those are all books that are in my book collection. All I did was search for them on Amazon, drag the Web link to the program, and viola! The data was brought into the program. What could be easier? Nothing! And what's really slick is that if a book you enter is still in print, Readerware doesn't just give you all the information, it also gives you a picture of the cover! I have to say, I was very impressed. And you can do the same thing with your favorite CDs or DVDs. The program really consists of three parts -- Readerware for books, ReaderwareVW for videos, and ReaderwareAW for music.

Readerware, by Readerware Corporation, is really a powerful program that's so easy-to-use that it seems simple. You can obtain the data in a variety of ways. Drag and drop from the Web, enter ISBN numbers, and if you have a barcode scanner, you can even scan the information in. The program makes it extremely easy to create databases of all your favorite books, music, and video. And compared to the old days of typing in all the information, this is a snap. The program even has support for Palm, so you can put your database on your PDA. Really impressive and I don't get impressed very easily any more. So, Readerware is not only a "Pick" it's also a Dr. File Finder Favorite and those are few and far between. So, if you have collections of music, books, movies, you need to give this program a try. I recommend it highly! Well done.

  • Black Hole Organizer
  • Version: 2.65
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Black Hole Organizer NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Black Hole Organizer, click here!

The Black Hole Organizer, by Lincoln Beach Software, is an award-winning "free form" database. It won the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Award in the "Best Business Application" category. This is a really innovative free form database that lets you keep all kinds of information. You can keep notes, links to Web pages, phone numbers, and lots more. The programs editor is full-featured, so you can have text in bold, italic, and underlined. Heck, you can even highlight things that are important. You can create new categories, new documents, and can even move documents between categories easily. If you wish you can even have multiple sub-categories. The program gives you a lot of flexibility, and I like that!

Black Hole Organizer, makes it easy to divide your data into groups that make sense to you. One of the features that I really like is the "floater." The floater can sit on your desktop where it's out of the way. Then, say you have an email address that you've copied to the clipboard. All you have to do is right-click on the floater, select the "Create Message From Clipboard" option, select the category where you want to clip to be added, and the contents of the clip in the clipboard is added to your database. It's just that easy! You can also drag files to the floater and they become part of your database. You never have to remember to "save" your work. Black Hole Organizer does that for you automatically. It sits on my desktop all day long, ready to accept new data quickly and easily.

Black Hole Organizer, by Lincoln Beach Software, is really handy on the Internet as well. You can store email addresses, Web page URL's, and it even has a built-in emailer. Send information to others right from within the program. Another cool feature lets you create links that lead to other files. So, for example, you can create a link within Black Hole that will open a Word document! Very cool. Black Hole Organizer is a great tool for keeping track of all your information. So, take the time to give it a try -- you won't be disappointed!

  • askSam
  • Version: 5.1
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download askSam NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of askSam, click here!

askSam, by askSam Systems, won the 2002 SIAF People's Choice Award in the "Best Application" category. And what an application it is! This powerful "freeform" database can help you to easily keep track of all your information. And, it can utilize data from a wide variety of sources. When I say "freeform" I mean that unlike conventional databases, that use predefined "fields", askSam lets you enter information randomly. That's right ... you add data that doesn't conform to any specific form. Type it in, or you can also import a wide variety of formats like HTML, text files, Rich Text Format (RTF) files, and even documents from Word, Excel, and more. Heck, you can even put your old email messages into the program, and then search through them.

askSam has really powerful searching capabilities. And, the searches are fast and efficient as well. Putting data into a database is one thing, and finding that data when you need it is another, and this baby makes it easy. You can search in a variety of way including wildcard searches (*.*) when you aren't exactly sure what you're looking for, and Boolean searches where you can use operators like NOT, OR, & AND. If that weren't enough, you can also search for things by date, any word or phrase, and more. Very nicely done!

askSam, by askSam Systems, is a really powerful freeform database. It gives you great flexibility by letting you import a large range of file formats. At the same time you can also enter data manually. Even more importantly, askSam gives you a variety of ways of finding the information you've stored. This award-winning program is both powerful and easy-to-use and that's a great combination. So, if you're looking for a database that's both powerful and flexible, take a really good look at askSam! I recommend it!

Well, that brings us to a close on my Dr. File Finder Database Roundup! I hope you enjoyed reading about these excellent programs. I'm off for now in search of some more great programs to tell you about, but I'll be back next week. Remember, if you try a shareware program and find yourself using it, be sure to pay for it. In this way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us! Till next week, be safe, be well, be kind to each other, and happy downloading.
