Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Greetings and Welcome! I'm glad you could stop by to take a look at my Picks for this week. As always I'm keeping really busy and I mentioned last week that I was getting ready for Winter. So what happens? We get temperatures in the 80's here in Colorado. That's okay, at least I'm ready. Today it can be 80 and tomorrow we could have a blizzard. In any event, I've looked at a lot of software and have picked out some excellent titles to tell you about. So, if you're ready, sit back, relax, and lets take a look.

  • WinDates
  • Version: 5.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

  • Download WinDates NOW!

WinDates, by Rockin' Software, is a powerful calendar program that I first saw years ago. And over those years the program has just continued to get better and better. It's wonderful for keeping track of all kinds of things for both home and business. You can use it to keep track of appointments, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Scout meetings, and much more! The program also give you all of the most common holidays and it provides you with the holidays for the US, Australia, Canada, and England. Slick. It also has support for international date and time formats, so WinDates is good all over the world. Another feature that I like is the ability to put in a variety of events. That means I can put in things that happen once, every week (like my Picks), every month, or yearly. And what's really cool is that you can even put in some custom events like the last Friday in October. Cool!

WinDates will put different items in different colors so you can have meetings in orange, appointments in red, birthdays in green - whatever you like! The program can also be used across a Local Area Network, or LAN, which is a great feature. This means the calendar can be shared among multiple people. And, even better, WinDates use the "iCalendar" standard format. What does that mean to you? Well, that the program can utilize the hundreds of shared calendars that you can find at www.icalshare.com. There are calendars for holidays, sports, concerts, and lots, lots more. The selection is impressive and you can use all of them with WinDates! The calendars you create can also be shared not only on your network but on the Internet as well. This is a great feature for families, groups, businesses, and others, who want to share calendar information online. Put up your schedule so everyone in your group can see it. Very nicely done.

WinDates, by Rockin' Software, is a powerful calendar program that's also very easy-to-use. The interface is intuitive and that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. The program is perfect for home or business, can be used across a network, lets you utilize 'shared' calendars, and even lets you put up your own calendars on the World Wide Web. The program gives you lots of configurable options and I really like that. I like this product so much that not only is it a Pick, but I'm also making it a Dr. File Finder Favorite - a distinction only given to special program. So, if you're looking for a calendar program that does it all, take a good look at this. I think you'll like it -- I recommend it highly!

  • Starfish Family Mail
  • Version:
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Starfish Family Mail NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Starfish Family Mail, click here!

Starfish Family Mail, by Lincoln Beach Software, is a perfect email program for the entire family. And what really caught my attention is that it addresses something that no other email program I've looked does -- family! And I've tried just about every email program out there. None of them are geared towards young children, teenagers, or even just people who find computers really challenging. Parents can create a list of approved email addresses or "Friends." Include Grandma and Grandpa, cousins, school friends, and whoever else you like. The key thing is that if an email address is not on the list, it can't be seen by your child. So, this is a perfect program for children and it would be great for use within schools!

Starfish Family Mail lets you create accounts so that each person can "log in" to do their email. And the program has all of the basic things you'd want from an email program. Send, receive, attach files, and so on. The program also supports the popular "skins" so you can make it have lots of different looks. At the same time, Starfish Family Mail strips out any HTML code that may be found in incoming emails so you'll only see text. That also means it won't run any hidden scripts that often carry viruses. Another very cool feature in the program is "authentication." What's that? Well, ever get an email from yourself? I have and lots of spammers use this trick to get past SPAM filters. The authentication feature lets user and sender agree on an authentication code that will be included in each email. Just a little line of text, like "itsreallyme" in the message. Then when email from that person comes in, the program will check to make sure the authentication text is there. If so, fine, and if not, no one will be able to read it. Very cool!

Starfish Family Mail, by Lincoln Beach Software, is a nice, basic email program that supports the POP3 and SMTP protocols. The interface is intuitive and it's very easy-to-use. It has a spell checker, Thesaurus, and even supports "skins!" At the same time it lets you determine exactly what email addresses you'll accept email from and it provides for extra authentication. In my opinion, it's the perfect email client for young people. At the same time, it would also be excellent for many older people who often have problems working with software. So, if you're looking for a nice, simple email program so you can email friends and family, this is it. And, if you're looking for something for your children to use, this is the best program I've seen. So, it's not only a "Pick", it's also a Dr. File Finder Favorite and those are few and far between. Give it a try!

  • File Scavenger
  • Version: 2.1v
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download File Scavenger NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of File Scavenger, click here!

File Scavenger, by QueTek Consulting Corporation, is a really handy utility for anyone that uses the NTFS (NT File System) on their computer. About a year ago I converted all my hard disks to NTFS. And while it offers benefits over the FAT (File Allocation Table) or FAT32 file systems, it also poses some new problems. Among them is the ability to "unerase" files. Well, File Scavenger can recover files and lots more from your NTFS drives. The program can recover files that you deleted from your Recycle Bin, from your file manager, or even from DOS. Very slick, but there's more!

File Scavenger can go so far as to help you recover a reformatted drive! Wow! Now that's impressive! And the program is fast and very efficient. In all of my testing I was very impressed with the way it was able to recover data. Now, please note. With nearly every "unerase" or "undelete" program I've ever tried, and I've tried just about all of them, the sooner you try the recovery, the better your odds of success. So, if you delete a file from Drive C and then install a couple of programs, your chances of getting back a file decrease. Yet, I've recovered things that had been deleted days before. Just depends how 'active' the drive is. File Scavenger makes the entire process very easy!

File Scavenger, by QueTek Consulting Corporation, is an impressive utility for everyone who utilizes the NTFS file system. I can recover files deleted from a DOS command line, the Recycle Bin, from within Windows, and more. This unassuming powerhouse can even help to recover a reformatted drive. It can "find" lost partitions, and recover them. Very cool. All of us accidentally delete things and it's really nice to be able to use a program that quickly brings that data back -- whether it's a file or a drive! So, if you use the NTFS file system, you really owe it to yourself to take a good, long look at this program. Check it out ... I highly recommend it!

Sadly, that's all we have time for this week. I really hope you enjoyed these Picks and will take the time to try them out. All of them are really excellent and well worth your time. I'll be back next week, on the day before Halloween, with more great programs to tell you about. I hope you'll join me then. Until then, have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading.
