Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

Reviewed This Week......

Welcome Back! I'm so glad you could take the time to stop by to read about my Picks for this week. As we swing into November there seem to be more and more things to do and get ready for. It won't be long before the holiday season will be upon us and we'll have to be ramping up for things like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've gone Christmas shopping with my two daughters every year for over 20 years, so we have it down to a science. Anyway, before you get busy with the holiday season, take the time to read about some great software. Remember, software can be a great gift for someone special. So, if you're all set, lets take a look.

  • GoldWave
  • Version: 5.06
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download GoldWave NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of GoldWave, click here!

GoldWave, by GoldWave, Inc., is a truly powerful program for working with sounds. Some might call it a digital audio editor, but I call it impressive! It's loaded with so many features that I doubt I'll be able to touch on all of them, but I'll do my best. Naturally, like similar products, it lets you play and mix audio files. You can also edit them and work with a wide range of special effects including echo, fade, reverb, flanger, distortion, doppler, mechanize, and many more. Another cool feature lets you convert sound files from one sound format to another. A wide range of formats is supported, including MP3, WAV, WMA, AIFF, and more.

GoldWave will also let you use the "line-in" feature of your computers sound card to record from old records (you know, 45's and that kind of thing), cassettes, 8 tracks, and more. And, if you have recordings that have defects, you can even use the program to remove irritating sounds like scratches, pops, clicks, and the like. It's amazing how much the program can improve your recordings from old sources. Very slick. If you wish you can also utilize the program to read tracks off of CDs and then save them as audio files. The program can also be used with a microphone - great for making custom sounds for your computer.

GoldWave by GoldWave, Inc., is an extremely powerful audio tool that's very easy-to-use. I found the interface to be very intuitive. It's great for doing all kind of things with your audio files including creating, editing, mixing, and more. It offers special audio effects, VU meters, the ability to record sounds from old sources, and lots more. And, on top of all that, if you use the NTFS file system, it can handle huge music files -- something that similar programs can't do. So, if you're looking for a program to work with your audio files take a good look at GoldWave. Very nicely done -- I think you'll like it!

  • DirSync Directory Synchronizer
  • Version: 1.3
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download DirSync Directory Synchronizer NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of DirSync Directory Synchronizer, click here!

DirSync Directory Synchronizer, by ArcherSoft, Inc., is a nifty utility for keeping files and folders synchronized. If you have more than one computer this is a great way to keep programs up-to-date between machines. For example, you can synchronize the "My Documents" folder on each of two computers. Have the synchronization go in both directions. And, when you're done, the two computers will both have exactly the same documents. Very handy for those who don't always work on the same computer. You can also synchronize in just one direction. This is useful for keeping a "backup" of a program in a different location -- like on another computer or even on another drive. Slick!

DirSync Directory Synchronizer lets you define "jobs" that you can use over and over again. You can also utilize the handy built-in scheduler to automate the synchronization process. This is a nice way to keep things backed up without having to worry about it. Just set up the scheduler and the program will take it from there at the times you specified. That's a real time-saver. You can also use it to really sync a desktop and a laptop, which is a big help if you've been off traveling. Another very nice feature is that the program maintains a detailed activity log for you so you can see exactly what's gone on. Slick!

DirSync Directory Synchronizer, by ArcherSoft, Inc., is a full-featured program for synchronizing multiple computers or just duplicating important files and folders in a different spot. It allows you to schedule your synchronization for times when it suits you, and keep a log of all the activity. It also has support for command line parameters, import and export, and will even "simulate" a job for you so you can see how it will go. The program is very nicely done and is very easy-to-use. The interface is intuitive and I think that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. So, if you have multiple computers you'd like to keep in sync, give this a try!

  • JustUrls
  • Version: 5.1
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download JustUrls NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of JustUrls, click here!

JustUrls, by Eastern Digital Pty. Ltd., is a nifty utility that makes it easy to access your favorite Web pages or launch your most frequently used programs. The program is very easy-to-use and has an intuitive interface. That makes it perfect for both new and also experienced users. When it comes to adding URLs (Universal Resource Locators) to the program, it's a snap! You can enter Web site information manually or you can even drag the link from your Web browser to the program and drop it. Another neat feature is that you can give each and every URL a unique font. This can make it very easy to find just the URL you're looking for just by looking for the distinctive font. Very slick.

JustUrls will also let you add programs to your list. It's a quick and easy way to access the programs you use most. Things like your email program, newsgroup reader, audio program, and the like. Another nice thing about the program is that it resides quietly in your system "tray". Then, when you want it all you have to do is pass your mouse cursor over it. Viola! There it is on your screen. Select the item you want - it will automatically launch a URL in your Web browser. Another really excellent feature is the ability to save, and share, your lists. The program will create files that have a file extension of .JURL. You can make one and send it to a family member or friend who is also using JustUrls and they can load it! Very nicely done.

JustUrls, by Eastern Digital Pty. Ltd., Is a very useful program for launching both your favorite Web sites and your favorite programs. You can customize the font used for each listing, share your lists with family and friends, and the program stays out of your way until you need it. It's easy to add new URLs, and you can have as many as your screen can hold. So, if you'd like to have a quick and easy way to launch all of your most favorite Web sites and programs take a good look at JustUrls. I think you'll like it!

Well, that's all we have time for this week. I hope you enjoyed reading about these fine programs as much as I enjoyed writing about them. All of them are truly excellent products and well worth the download time. As the holidays approach, keep your eyes open for software that might be good for the computer person in your life. I'll be back next week with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, I hope you have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading.
