Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Greetings and Salutations! I'm so glad you've come by to take a look at my Picks for this week. As always its been a busy week. I'm working hard for my clients, I've been working on some things for the Shareware Industry Awards Foundation, spending some time with my granddaughter Cahlia, and getting ready for surgery on my left wrist next week. No, it's not carpal tunnel -- something I've been asked multiple times. Simply arthritis from doing martial arts. Anyway, among all these things I've naturally made time to look at lots of software. And, I've picked out some interesting programs to tell you about. So, if you're all set, just sit back, relax, and lets take a look.

  • 1st TurboRun
  • Version: 2,0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download 1st TurboRun NOW!

1st TurboRun, by Green Parrots Software, is an extremely simple utility that does exactly what it claims to do. I always like that in any program. And just what exactly does it do? Why, it finds things. All kinds of things on your computer. One of the really interesting things about the program is that unlike many similar programs, it doesn't do any indexing. That means that it doesn't have a long, tedious period of searching on your hard disk to gather the information it provides. Which makes the information it does provide all the more amazing!

1st TurboRun will let you quick locate anything on your computer. And I do mean a n y t h i n g! If you look at the screen capture you'll see I captured a search on "siaf". And it found every folder and file that had "siaf" in it. The instant you start typing, the program starts narrowing down the possibilities. So, for example, the by the time I had typed in the "si" of "siaf", 1st TurboRun had already found numerous items. And as I continued to type, it narrowed it down until just what I wanted was there. You can use it to quickly find documents, program files, bookmarks, and lots more. And, if that weren't enough, you can quick open any of the things you've found. For example, when I searched on "SIAF", I could easily open any of the Word documents it found with just a mouse click! Very slick.

1st TurboRun, by Green Parrots Software, is one of those programs that caught my eye because it worked and it worked well. Not a lot of flash. No real big "bells and whistles", but real solid programming. I tested it for hours, looking for all kind of things and not only could it find what I was looking for, but I could then launch what I'd been looking for. I truly like it when a program is powerful in its simplicity. So, if you'd like to have an easy way to find anything on your computer, just take a good look at this product. You'll be glad you did and I recommend it.

  • Relative Rev Backup
  • Version: 2.2
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Relative Rev Backup NOW!

Relative Rev Backup, by DataMills, is a powerful utility for backing up all of the important information you keep on your computer. I found the program to be very easy-to-use and quite intuitive. That makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. I've said this numerous times, but I'll say it again, "You need to keep your computer backed up, and if you don't, you're asking for trouble!" One of the neat features in this program is that it allows you to take "snapshots" of the information on your machine. And, you can even take "incremental" snapshots over a period of time. At the same time you decide just how far back your backups go. So, for example, say you tell the program to keep four (4) backups. Once it gets to that point and you go to make the fifth one, it simply deletes the oldest of the backups. Very neat!

Relative Rev Backup has a really nice "wizard" that helps guide you through the process. You can create multiple backup sets and then schedule them to run when you're not around. Another nice feature is that the program supports a wide range of backup media, including ZIP disks, CD-RW discs, DVDs, JAZZ disks, network drives and more! The program also makes it very easy to restore data should you need it. And I do mean easy! Just pick the backup set you want -- the date and the files you want restored. Then just pick where you want them restored to. A very handy wizard will also help you with the restore process. All in all you have complete control over restoring your data, and that's important.

Relative Rev Backup, by DataMills, is powerful yet easy-to-use. It comes with "wizards" to help make the entire backup and restore process a simple matter. By allowing incremental snapshots it gives you a great deal of flexibility in keeping all your data safe. At the same time, it supports a wide range of media so your backup options are almost endless. So, if you're looking for a good way to protect all of the data on your hard disk, this might be just what you're looking for. Give it a try -- I think you'll like it!

Hx - In the early days of computers, hard disks were smaller. My first hard disk was a 10 megabyte external drive and it cost $800.00. Now you can get a 64 megabyte drive for around $50 that fits on your keychain. Of course, many things were simpler back then and some programs were just one file. Today, some programs comprise hundreds of files. I've seen games that required 500 megabytes. My one drive has over 60,000 files on it. That's more files than I had on all the computers I had combined from 1982 to 1992. So, with so many more files, and machines that are so much faster, it's all the more reason to backup your hard disk on a regular basis. 64 megabytes on a keychain? My how times have changed -- -- Doc

  • Finders Keepers
  • Version: 2.02.5
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info
  • Download Finders Keepers NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Finders Keepers, click here!

Finders Keepers, by Yadu Digital, Inc. is another nifty tool for searching for things on your computer. It doesn't just search for files, however, it also searches inside them. You can have it index files, folders, or even entire drives. The program also gives you a variety of search methods. You can search by sound-alike, regular expressions, approximate, or plain-text searches. And if the program just found what you're looking for that would probably be enough, but there's more! It will also let you edit text or even replace text. You can even replace text in more than one document at a time, which is a great feature. Another excellent feature is the built-in ASCII and binary file viewer. Very nicely done.

Finders Keepers will let you delete files, copy files, move files, and even change file attributes. I also liked the fact that I could exclude a wide range of file types from my searches. By being able to eliminate programs with certain file extensions, it makes the searches faster and more efficient. Due to the fact that the program can access, and alter, a wide range of files, there's also password protection. You can utilize this if you want to prevent more inexperienced users from doing any damage. An index will help you to find, and correct, misspellings, but that's not all. Click on a word in the index and the program will show you a list of indexed files where that word appears. Very cool!

Finders Keepers is powerful tool for working with files, text, doing search and replace, and lots more. While it should be easy for user with more experience, I'd suggest that newer users take their time with it. And be sure to consult the help file. The program is fast, quickly indexes a list of folders or an entire drive. It can search and replace across multiple files, lets you edit, copy, move, and delete, and much, much, more. So, if you work with a lot of text and are looking for a solid tool, give Finders Keepers a try. It may be just what you're looking for.

Once again, that's all I have time for this week. I hope you enjoyed these Picks and take the time to try them out for yourself. And remember, if you try a "shareware" product and find yourself using it, be sure to buy it. In that way the shareware marketing concept works for all of us. I've got a busy week coming up with surgery on Tuesday, but I'll be back next Thursday with more Picks to tell you about. Until then, I hope you have a great week, a wonderful weekend, and happy downloading!
