Dr. File Finder's Picks

Reviews of Excellent Software

by Michael E. Callahan aka Dr. File Finder ™

Reviewed This Week......

Reviewed by Dr. File Finder
Greetings! I'm glad you stopped by for a look at the "Picks" for this week. I've been downloading and trying lots of programs and I think I've got some really good ones to tell you about. So, sit back, relax, put your feet up, and let's take a look!

  • Group Mail Free
  • Version: 3.4
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Group Mail Free NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Group Mail Free, click here!

Group Mail Free, by infacta, Ltd., is designed from the ground up to make it easy for you to do bulk emailings. It's excellent for sending out update notices, newsletters, church bulletins, and lots more. Each and every message can be personalized because the program lets you insert variables into your messages. That means you can include things like the persons first name, address, phone number, and lots more. This helps to make your messages really personal. At the same time the program keeps everyones information private and that's important. The program can also handle bounced messages and can verify all of your recipients. Very nicely done!

With Group Mail, you can maintain and manage as many recipient lists as you want. Easily add, edit, and delete names. You can even import new recipients from a file, the Windows clipboard, or even an address book. And the program makes it easy-to-do! Very slick! I personally use Group Mail Pro to do all of the notification messages for the Shareware Industry Awards nominations and voting. It works like a charm! I use it right from my own desktop, but you can also use Group Mail with a dedicated email server. That gives you real flexibility. And talking about flexibility, Group Mail is simply loaded with other cool features. Just a few of them include the ability to send SMS text messages, send messages in almost any language, support for subscriptions and removals, and lot, lots, more.

Group Mail Free, by infacta, Ltd., is an extremely powerful, yet easy-to-use program for doing bulk emailings. It manages your messages, your recipient lists, keeps logs of its activity, and so much more. There are plug-ins and add-ons available that even extend what the program can do. And, while this version is free, there are a Pro and Plus version that can do even more! Over the years I've looked at, and used, a lot of bulk email programs and Group Mail is the best I've seen. Give it a try for yourself and you'll see what I mean!

  • IDEAL Calendar
  • Version: 4.0
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download IDEAL Calendar NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of IDEAL Calendar, click here!

IDEAL Calendar, by IDEAL Computer Services, Inc., is a nifty calendar program that will help keep you on track. Use it to keep track of occasions like birthdays, meetings, doctors appointments, and other events you don't want to forget. You can even have the program remind you when an event is coming up. Very handy to have a box pop up and a sound play reminding you about "Grandma's Birthday!". The program can sit in the system tray, ready to remind you and always at hand for reference. You can easily move from month-to-month and year-to-year. Very slick.

This program has a number of options that make it very flexible. You can, for example, use your own BMP, JPG, or GIF files to give your calendar a unique background. Give it just the look you want. You can decide what day the week starts on, change the color that your occasions appear in, and pick the font you want the calendar to use. Another neat feature is that you can have your calendar display itself at a specified time each day. I also liked the fact that I could "suspend" events that I had created, and then reactivate them at a later time. And, if you like, you can export your calendar in a variety of formats, including HTML, plain text, and CSV!

IDEAL Calendar, by IDEAL Computer Services, Inc., is a nicely done calendar program with lots of options. And, for businesses it also has a multi-user feature which allows different people to have different calendars. It allows import and export of data, and lets you make your calendar look just the way you want. Take the time to give this one a try ... and keep yourself on track!

  • Backup Plus
  • Version: 7.0.4
  • System Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Get more info.
  • Download Backup Plus NOW!
  • To see a screenshot of Backup Plus, click here!

Backup Plus, by AVANTRIX Inc., is a high-powered backup and restore program that's also easy-to-use. And backing up your computer is really important. If you don't, you're asking for disaster. And Backup Plus lets you back up everything, from single files to complete drives. You decide what to back up, and when, by creating what are called "backup sets." A backup set is really just a listing of the files, folders, and so on that you want to backup. You can have multiple backup sets and there's even a "wizard" to help you! And there are a number of configurable options, including how backups are named, adding password protection, and more!

With Backup Plus, you can backup your data to a variety of media including ZIP and JAZ disks, floppy disks, CD-R, and CD-RW's. That gives you lots of flexibility depending on what you have and on what you have to backup. One of my favorite features, however, is the ability to do timed or scheduled backups. This adds a real level of convenience. Lets say you're backing up to a CD-R disc. You can put a new disc in your drive and have it ready. Have Backup Plus set to backup at say 10:00 p.m. At that time the program will come alive and backup the backup sets you've selected. Just remember to keep in mind how much space is available for backup to when you're picking your backup sets.

Backup Plus, by AVANTRIX Inc., is a great tool for backing up, and restoring, all of the important data on your computer. Data that it might be impossible to replace otherwise. The ability to use a variety of media and do timed backups make it extremely flexible. And, it's so intuitive that it's perfect for both new and advanced users. So, if you aren't backing up your important files, you should be. And if you're going to backup, take a good look at Backup Plus! It's what I use and I think it's the best I've seen!

That brings us to a close for this week. I sincerely hope you like these picks and take the time to try them out for yourself. I think you'll find that these are some of the best programs available here on Simtel! I'm off to download more products and I'll be back again next week with more picks. Till then, have a great week and happy downloading!
